Best Drummer...

If we are talking metal drummers. He started getting all sick on Reign. Sandoval from Morbid, and others just took that shit to the next insane level. But Dave was the first who started getting way out therre, and on time, in tune, etc... By the way, not that it matters, but Lars Ulrich, aside from being an egotistical chatterbox, is a horrible drummer. Just as Kirk Hammet is way overrated as a guitarist. Not to toot mt own horn, but I play stringed instuments (36 yrs. old, started at7) and smoke his ass. But thats just stupid too. Its mainly about being in the right place, right time, right people, etc.. I digress. This thread is about drummers.

Miguel Ferrer (ok, so I'm obsessed...but this guy is actually pretty good on a drumset...)

SHAWN PELTON

He's the drummer for the SNL house band, and Sheryl Crow...but I've taken a class with his fusion jazz band the Coalition, he's INSANE. Like worked in electronics and live drums and I've yet to see texture like what he can create from any other person, he is insane.

Danny Carey is my favorite, for his composition skills, articulation, and his alien indepedence. Neil Peart is undoubtedly one of the most influential drummers of our time, I can hear his style in alot of what I play. Carter Beauford is another favorite, very tasteful and groovy. Also played open originally without knowing how crazy that is for a young drummer. I'm sure this post will grow as I think of more.

i really dont believe that a drummer from any genere of music could ever touch some of the best metal drummers. its not becuase im a fan of the music either i just think itd be like comparing a black bear to a kodiak - they are both very impressive creatures but one has a level of magesty the other will never be able to touch. As per who is the best? No such thing. I hear someone that blows me away in their own right, and the same thing in a different way from someone totally different he next week.

Don't be ignorant man. I'm not going to start a metal vs. everything else argument, but I can assure you that there are non-metal drummers out there that have the ability to do even the most complicated double bass, but choose not to.

metal vs everythign else g'damn it

we are taking over the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

^Yeah, Tortoise actually has three great drummers. I just saw them back in September--great show!

that doesn't seem to make sense to me. are metal guitarists in a different league to other guitarists? just because [insert finger-tappin' pentatonic distorto-junkie here] can play intricate scales at 10,000,000 BPM doesn't make them a better guitarist than Jimi Hendrix, does it?

so why exactly should drummers be regarded differently?

musicianship is about so much more than speed, complexity or even technical proficiency. i've seen african tribal drummers who imho piss all over [insert generic double-kick metalhead here]. after all, how many metal drummers can rock it with just one drum? :) the range of expression, timbre and improvisation which some traditional tribal drummers possess is astonishing.

and what about tabla?

you think [insert previously named metal drummer]'s 'majesty' would enable them to step up & play that? some of these guys have been playing tabla for like 30 years.

it's the height of arrogance to dismiss all genres other than metal.

^Heh. The thing about Ween is that their live show is well-executed stadium rock while their records are more for Dean and Gene to fuck around. I recommend watching their Live in Chicago DVD and seeing if you agree. :)

Werd on the rest of your post.
