Amazing Percussionists

So many amazing drummers have been named here, its impossible to pick the "sickest" one. It is possible to pick a favorite, but each of these musicians are amazing in their own right. Being a drummer myself, I especially appreciate a wide variety of drummers, and always opening my mind to new sounds and styles. THe basic rudiments wont change, but drummers will....

I loved Elvin James, and Buddy Rich as a kid. Danny Carey is an amazing musician, His kit is entirely made of melted down Paiste cymbals and formed into shells, giving him quite the unique sound. Though this isnt the kit he uses on tour, I have seen video of him playing it, and the sound is one of a kind.

Tomas Haake is amazing with his timing and ability to keep up with the changes, or maybe they are keeping up with him....I dont really know Meshuggahs music too much, but they are exact with regard to time sigs.

Carter Beauford, again another amazing percussionist. Dave Weckyl, Terry Bozzio, Carmine Appice...theory masters in their own right. Dennis Chambers is also amazing, and I once attended a clinic for snare drumline when I was in high school.

If you want to see some amazing drumming....check out DCI...Drum Corps International......These amateur musicians are astonishing to watch, especially if you are on some nice nuggage.

I appreciate all of the opinions in this thread, and not a single one is more or less correct than the other. Great Thread!!!

i really dont believe that a drummer from any genere of music could ever touch some of the best metal drummers. its not becuase im a fan of the music either i just think itd be like comparing a black bear to a kodiak - they are both very impressive creatures but one has a level of magesty the other will never be able to touch. As per who is the best? No such thing. I hear someone that blows me away in their own right, and the same thing in a different way from someone totally different he next week.

lol Igor Cavalera!!! Hes pretty good, wouldnt even put him in the top 100 tho. Doesnt mean he doesnt kick mountains of ass, he def works the tribalstyle drums great.

How do these statements even go together?

Regardless, I just don't see how you can be of the mindset that no other drummers are as good as metal drummers. I know I've argued in the past with you about this subject, and you always answer with "well so-and-so had training in jazz or whatever." And that may be, but that doesn't mean they would stack up to Art Blakey or someone like him playing jazz, on the other hand that doesn't mean Art Blakey could stand up to a kick ass metal drummer. I fail to see how that makes the metal drummer a superior musician; in fact, assuming the metal drummer is always going to be "the best" is just completely fucking ridiculous.

The best drummers are the ones that take multiple styles and meld them into something completely their own while staying true to the music they are contributing to.

while he's nowhere near the best, I appreciate Morgan Rose's work, especially on Sevendust's 'home' cd.
