Best Drummer...

Oooh. I'm going to have some fun with this thread. I will respond later.

My list is obviously skewed toward the heavy:

Thomas Haake (Meshuggah) (Does he have 3 hands??!)
Danny Carey (Tool)
Raymond Herrera (Fear Factory)
Martin Lopez (Opeth)
Ken Schalk (Candiria)
Chris Pennie (The Dillinger Escape Plan)
Jason Bittner (Shadows Fall)
Matt McDonough (Mudvayne)
Flo Mounier (Cryptopsy)

I leave the other good death, black and grind drummers for the Wood, the expert in that department :)

I don't know his name, but Slipknot's drummer is fuckin SICK.

Joey Jordison

yeah, he's nasty...and a tiny fucking dude too

Joey Jordison relies on double bass far too much. It shouldn't be used as a crutch. He's also a fucking idiot if you've ever read any interviews with him. 8)

Classic rock drummers are good for their time and place, but Mitch Mitchell? Ginger Baker? What did either one of those two do after Hendrix and Cream, respectively. Nothing. Perhaps I haven't heard enough of them, but I feel both are lackluster at best. The only reason Bonham and Moon didn't move along is because they died too early into their careers.

Alright here are my picks separated loosely by genre, in no particular order, and definitely incomplete.

Rock
Danny Carey
Claude Coleman
John Fishman
Glenn Kotche
Matt Cameron
Stewart Copeland
Tim "Herb" Alexander

Jazz
Art Blakey
Max Roach
Buddy Rich
Gene Krupa
Tony Williams
Jack DeJohnette

Jazz/Rock/Funk (kind of a loose category to encompass drummers with range)
Andrew Barr
Billy Martin
Josh Dion
Steve Gadd
Billy Cobham
Vinny Colaiuta

Latin
Chico Valdez
Tito Puente

That's it for now. I'll add more as I think of them.

I don't know if I could say who's the best, but Pete Sandoval from Morbid Angel is pretty sick. The double kicking on "Dawn of the Angry" is probably the fastest I've ever heard. Well, maybe not, but he's a great drummer anyway.

"Martin Lopez (Opeth)" Martin Lopez is fuckin sick, Opeth is amazing all around. He was pretty fuckin good in Amon Amarth too.

Gene Hoglan is also insanely talented. John Tempesta too. Igor Cavalera on early Sepultura was amazing.

But if I had to choose just one as the best, it would have to be Flo Mounier. It really is incredible that he can keep such a rapid pace, and do it through every song. You could practice drumming everyday for years, and still not be able to play half as well as him.

Danney Carrey is the best drummer alive IMO.

Next to him is Brain.

And is this just drummers as in a normal kit....or can all kinds of other percussionists be included? If so then Zakkir Hussein is the greatest percussionist (tablas).

How can you make such rediculous statements like "best alive?"

Have you heard every drummer alive? No.

I don't have a ton to say on this, but I'll comment on Brain being mentioned. He used to be a lot better in Primus's past days. I recently saw him with c2b3 and it seemed like he just didn't have it quite like he used to.

What does he use double bass in like 3 songs per album?
Death metal bands use it every song, for huge periods of time...what your point?

It is overused is my point. I don't care who is doing it.

32nd notes on a bass drum gets obnoxious when it goes throughout the whole song. It should be used tastefully and musically.

I hear ya; a lot of heavy bands want their sound to be "intimidating," thus the double bass. It's a friggin right of passage or something. It definitely can get annoying if overdone though.

For amazing use of double bass as a texture, I point to Danny Carey. The man can make the drums sound unbelievably intimidating. Metal drummers that rely on double bass like I described above get filed into the hack category in my book.

Pat Mastelotto - friends w/ Danny Carey, apparently - is just as skilled at using the double bass for texture. His playing with King Crimson over the last few years has grown on me - it veered toward abrasive patterns a little too much on their 2000 album, but hit a real groove afterward. Like Bill Bruford before him, he can integrate all manner of percussive whatnots (electronics in his case) and still keep it all tasteful and forceful.

Seriously, they are friends. Adrian Belew just cut some tracks with Les Claypool and Danny Carey for his solo album =D

im goin with Paul Mazurkiewicz, but there are really just too many to name. Flo Mounier is really sick too.

non metal drummers are cute, but laughable. its funny when metronomes are considered skillfull.

I don't know if this comment is tongue in cheek or what, but, if not, it is so fucking moronic it is not even funny.
