i was wondering what drugs and supplements have worked for people with chronic paranoid delusions and anxiety.

i know benzos are an option but the anxiety comes up daily and he doesnt want to take benzos regularly becuase of addiciton issues that stopping these drugs could result in worsened symptoms. also paranoia goes hand in hand with his anxiety and doesnt wast something that will cause any paranoid episodes.

i was thinking on the lines of lyrica but my firend doesnt want to jump to that if there are supplements that could help to try first.

any suggestions?

Lyrica is great for the anxiety, BUT it's only effective like twice a week at the very most. You need like 3 days in between dosing for it to give you relief (in my experience, and ask anyone who takes it, read the lyrica megathread).

Ask your doctor what they recommend is right for your specific case. But I think 5-HTP is a good supplement for the mood, just be careful when taking ANY supplement about any food/drug interactions they may have.

Ask your doctor.

If you have full blown paranoid delusions you'll probably want to be on a prescription antipsychotic. Over the counter remedies won't really cut it.

Go to your doctor like sekio said.

If you absolutely refuse to do so, then people may suggest things like kava kava, kratom, over the counter drugs, but I wouldn't do anything before consulting a doctor.

You may not even need drugs, have you tried therapy?

I have anxiety issues that have mostly been worked out over the years. It stems from a mixture of growing up in a family where depression/anxiety run through and excessive amphetamine/caffeine use.

These are the things that have helped me:
1) Therapy
2) Meditation
3) A single MDMA experience I had with close friends where I focused on exploring my anxiety
4) Piracetam (This isn't the case for everyone--but it sure as hell has helped me with anxiety in doses of 2g-4g)

But like everyone else says, see a doctor, but don't accept benzos, they're honestly not worth it and just bandage the problem and do not help. My family has a lot of medical doctors, and the ones who aren't particularly familiar with research in a certain disorder (i.e. anxiety, ADHD) will be quick to prescribe the most commonly prescribed drug for it (Benzos and Amphetamine respectively). Benzos, however, can be useful for particularly bad cases of anxiety. There was one semester of college where my anxiety was particularly bad--I would not have made it without benzos, but if my winter break had not come up I would have probably become addicted to them. So it's a dangerous thing to toy with. Therapy really is the most helpful thing in the long-term. If you need Benzos more than once a week, say twice a week, see if you can cycle it with Phenibut. They act on different GABA receptors (A and B respectively), but don't think Phenibut has less addictive potential than Benzos--it certainly does.

Edit: I overlooked the severity of the paranoid delusions, that's definitely requiring a therapist/doctor, or at least, that would be my recommendation.

From what Im told SSRI works well with OCD-like paranoia. If it borders on the psychotic paranoia, then go for anti psychotic meds.

first, before I give my advice, he really should see a doctor and get on an antipsychotic or antidepressant. I'm on three myself, there really is no shame in it. I'd say green would help the anxiety, but in some people would increase the paranoid delusions! Benzos are an option, but I'd reccommend something like Neurontin or Lithium if you really want this taken care of properly. Well, see a doctor if you want that. SSRIs may also be helpful.

Though I know you are hesitant to use a benzodiazepine on a daily basis, I think that they could be very useful for you. I might suggest Klonipin (clonazepam) in particular. It is a very potent anxiolytic, and can be somewhat sedating. It helps to relax the muscles as well. It has a long half-life, which means if you dose it several times daily you will reach a fairly steady level of clonazepam plasma levels and a steady efficacity in relieving anxiety/paranoia. I might also suggest an anti-psychotic, although these are very dangerous and unhealthy drugs. I do believe an anti-psychotic either used daily if neccessary or as needed could be of help to you, but of course be cautious of dangerous and irrevocable side-effects that could be caused by such anti-psychotics. In lieu of an anti-psychotic, a tricyclic anti-depressant or a "TCA" could help. TCA's possess some anti-psychotic properties as well as anti-depressant properties, and can help heaps with anxiety and depression. They, while dangerous, are generally less unhealthy than anti-psychotics for the most part. In fact, I think a TCA might be very helpful for you. I suggest you become informed on various psych meds, and do not blindly take what a psychiatrist might give you.
