International Bluelighters,

Originally from the United States, I have done quite a lot of traveling both domestic and abroad. I have watched electronic music progress throughout the years and obviously have crafted my genre preferences but always seem to return to ambient/deep house. I am currently scheduling a trip that is half business half pleasure to Berlin and am curious to go to club Berghain - arguably one of the highest ranked electronic music clubs in the world. Not a lot of known about Berghain as it is looked at much more as a lifestyle/cognitive state of mind where pharmacological and sexual exploration is fully encouraged, no mirrors or cameras allowed and time is redefined slightly (no clocks, people are lining up to get in at 8 am) Having not been there myself, I have only heard stories. It is known that Berghain is a gay club in a very old communist looking building. I have heard stories (second hand, of course) of sex rooms/dungeons but would like to know if any bluelighters have had the experience of going to this club.

these are truly some of the only photos you can find, it is a very mysterious but very popular place -- almost beyond the scope of understanding for an American.

Yes, I have been to Berghain and it is a very, very impressive experience. It's a dome, dark, raw, cathederal-like, hypnotic place that is not for the average clubber who just wants to have some fun.

Due to the huge rise in popularity getting in is notoriously difficult. There are tens and tens of threads in various EDM forums about tips on how to get in but there are few ways that will guarantee you an entry. I think if you don't know the doormen there's only one 100% certain way of not waiting for several hours just to be turned down by a strict "Nein". There's a gay sex club called Lab.Oratory in the same building as Berghain. If you go to Lab.Oratory (only men are let in, obviosly, and you have to be naked, but you don't have to engage in any sexual activity and no one is harassing you) and buy a few drinks and can bear the experience (my friend has done it, I'm not that much into Techno that I would do it) for a few hours you can ask for a stamp when you leave the club. With this stamp you get pass the queue to Berghain and a 99,9% sure entry if you're not too intoxicated.

Berghain is the ultimate dome of Techno in this world. There is nothing that rivals it. It's not without reason it has been chosen as the best club in the world. It's not a "gay club", it's a gay friendly club with gays running the club. That's why gays usually have a better chance of getting in than others.

At the entry you may often see this doorman. Sven. Known as Germany's scariest doorman.

jrrz1t.jpg

Here's a funny but quite accurate description of what people Sven lets in and not.

Anyway, some advice do apply in almost all cases:

- Don't be visibly drunk or high (once inside you can be as high as you want)
- Don't dress (too) fashionably - this is not a trendy fashion club with any dress code. Looking freaky, weird, avantgard, goth, cross-dressing etc is a plus.
- Don't speak loudly (especially not English, the people most likely to be rejected are Americans and Brits)
- Don't look nervous
- Don't pretend to be gay just because gays usually are let in
- Don't go in large groups. It's best to be max two, best to be alone. If you're a larger group, split up.

If you won't get in, don't start begging or yelling. You won't get in if you're turned down. The local Berliners usually come sometimes in the morning or early afternoon. This is the best time to go anyway and the atmosphere at Berghain is best then. If you know a local Berliner, it's a huge plus to go with him/her. If you can speak German (even a few phases), even better. But don't count on anything - people who are there just for the music, behaving good, not speaking loudly etc can be turned down. Sometimes because the bouncer is in a bad mood. Sometimes because there are enough people like you let in already. The doormen try to maintain a mixture of different people inside. But remember Berlin is a huge city with probably the highest concentration of clubs in the world. Especially Techno clubs. If you're rejected, try Tresor. You won't be disappointed (although the old Tresor was better IMO, but the house it was in was demolished).

Some say the door policy is discriminatory, but remember Berghain was first and foremost established as a Techno club for the locals. The huge, even mythic popularity of the club means very many tourists want to go and check out the club. But you don't go to Berghain to "check it out", you go there because it's a cathedral of Techno, raw, uninhibited (yes, people fuck openly in the club), everything your average Trance club is not. There's no glitter or bling bling, no VIP rooms, no fancy decorations. Besides the main hall (where usually hard Techno is played) there's also the Panorama Bar where mostly house and tech-house is played. The huge wall in the Panorama Bar is covered by a male spreading his asshole - a bit like goatse. This is kind of the spirit of the place, as I said, raw and uninhibited. A bit like getting a punch in the face. Once you've recovered from the punch, you start getting sucked in by the atmosphere. You're not allowed to take any pictures inside the club either.

If you get in, you will be impressed. You damn sure will be impressed. Even I, mostly a psytrance freak, is mesmerized by this place. It is a state of mind. I've never experienced anything like it.

Regarding whether it's beyond the scope of understanding for an American I don't know. Maybe. Europeans and in particular Germans take their Techno very seriously. I mean very seriously. Nowhere else is this reflected as good as in Berghain. The German mindset is a bit unique, and this may seem more strange to Americans than Europeans because after all, well, we are Europeans and do some things differently. It may seem rude that there's no overtly (and fake) politeness, no "oh how nice", "you're welcome", "lovely" (you get the point) - Germans are punctual and straight-forward (just like we Finns, we are often compared to Germans because we are perceived as serious, rude people with no humour. This is certainly not true of either one) and this straight-forward, no-fancy, no-nonsense mentality is reflected perfectly in Berghain. It's just a little different approach to social life. I'm not saying it's better or worse (than e.g. in the US), it's just different in certain aspects. For the better or worse - come and see for yourself and decide.

Edit: Oh, and remember to enjoy the city itself. It's a truly unique city with a very liberal atmosphere. Cannabis is legal there and you're allowed to have up to 15 grams with you. Especially in Eastern Berlin the smell of weed seems to be in the air just about everywhere (remember though Germany is a federal state like the US and Berlin is a city state, some states in Germany won't tolerate any cannabis at all).

Edit2: The last picture you posted of Berghain tells more than a thousand words. I have to repost it a little bigger.

Sounds really interesting.. Sometimes I feel like I would fit in better in german society than here in the US. American culture really confuses me/pisses me off. Maybe because I'm half german?

I've only lived in the US for 4 years and the biggest issue that I had was the constant cognitive dissonance. Things like having the "Taco Bell" half time at a sporting event, I mean what does Taco Bell have to do with sports? Don't get me wrong, fastfood companies sponsoring sports events is a common thing all around the world, it's just that the US takes it to an extreme. Just too much superficial commercial. My experiences are probably not very representative of life in large cities. I lived in a town of 100K people, NYC, Chicago, San Francisco was a whole different world. :D

Then again, I've been living in Ukraine for the past 2 years and I am already sick of it (and I am Ukrainian by nationality). :\

Yeah stuff like that really doesn't make sense. Some people are just so greedy and so careless. Taco Bell offered enough money to the owner of the sports venue so that he didn't even care if it was a dumb thing to have. Really sad IMO. People have no class. Maybe other countries aren't much different, but the way people here act around other people, both "friends" and "strangers" is absurd as well. Very few people seem to just spark up a conversation with people they don't know, even if they have a reason to. People on the bus don't even say hello to the person they sit next to. If you're a quiet person you don't have to chat the entire time but you could at least be friendly and say hi. Anyway, I'm derailing the topic..

During a trip to Berlin I had recently made this was one of my goals to get in, never actually made it in though. Second was Tresor and everywhere I tried I couldn't find it... My local Berlin friends came from a trip out of town on my last 3 days... Unfortunately we didn't have the time to check out Tresor...

There are many, many clubs in Berlin that play Minimal/Tech-House, I was looking for more heavier stuff with less touristic people around... Most of the clubs had a lot of what I'd seen in North America...
Tresor was the initial goal and I failed. Maybe next year though, and I will extend my trip.
This is one city I want to move to and live in eventually on the long run, gotta learn the language first though...

I'd suggest knowing/finding people in the Techno scene, I made the mistake of staying with people not interested in this music and thus made it difficult to go...
Either way, it will be a trip to remember for you, the historic sights are one thing, and the night/day party life is never ending during the summer months I presume. I went in September, maybe that was a mistake for me right when University was starting....

I remember at the squatting houses, a 5 minute walk to the Hostel I stayed at (was very cheap, and very nice), one side is all fancy restaurents/bars, the other is run-down squatting houses. A strip-club/Brothel on the corner, than the squatting places began, there was one little club that played all sorts of music - first night was Minimal-Techno, the second was industrial-hardcore type stuff, but I didn't check it out beyond that.

The group of guys there every night asking every tourist if they need Cocaine or Ganja got rather annoying - they were sketchy and clearly dipping into their supply a bit too much...

Not sure to call it a club or not, it was like a apartment room turned into a open place, people coming in and out to score drugs there... I heard the city was tearing those things down soon though. There is nothing else inside there except the washrooms and drug-dealers/users/junkies... I think me being Afghan gave me 'respect' amongst the dealers/moroccan crowd/gangs out of nowhere... And I remember some skin-heads as well late in the nights who'd give dirty looks at us... Funny though cause both myself and my american friend who was with me were rather ridiculous hippy-looking people... The rest of our friends were University students there...
Both groups (Moroccans & Skinheads) are shite but nothing to worry about if you're not alone... Many nights I was alone wandering around the town searching for spots moving from place to place after the others decided to go home and sleep...

This Hostel is one I would recommend also to anyone interested in a safe/cheap/fun place to stay...
http://baxpax.de/en/downtown/ This is the exact location I'm talking about though they have a few others as well.
The K-Lounge(or K-Studio?): A 30 bed-room area, not for the faint of heart or non-open I would say haha... A friend we met at the hostel stayed in there for his entire trip. Every night if you want to sleep you can't because there may be 5 or so couples fucking on the bunk-beds anytime from 12am-8am (Loud, Shaky, and probably annoying for the person on the second bed uptop or underneath hahaha..) entertaining to me but some may want a good resting spot... Cheapest to stay inside there, and you can walk in/out whenever...

Loved this spot cause it was in walking distance to the trainstation, corner stores with beer/smokes/cheap food - though the bar had a supply there as well with marked up prices (Pointless). We would often goto the store, buy packs of beer and drink those outside on the patio/in. We also switched rooms every night just to meet new people... Very friendly staff, all english speaking. You'll meet a lot of people around the world at this place, some you'll like, some you won't.

As for proper Techno/Hard-Techno I didn't manage to find any places playing what I was searching for (I think Tresor is open for like 3-days on certain weekends) so plan your trip wisely and have local contacts

Local contacts is a huge bonus both in regards to getting information about clubs (there are many Techno clubs in Berlin, but some are quite underground) and getting in to the more well-known clubs (Berghain, Tresor etc). It's sad the city is tearing down many of the old buildings and replacing them with commercial offices and skyscrapers. This was the fate of the old Tresor, which IMO was much better than the current Tresor. Still, Tresor is a great club and definitely worth a visit for all Techno heads. It has the same kind of dark, industrial feeling Berghain has. Then there's of course Watergate, which is a more mixed club genre-wise with everything from Trance to Techno. But it's a much more commercial club and has a dresscode that can be strict (here dressing fashionably is a big plus). Not my thing.

For those looking for Psytrance/Goatrance parties, you really need to know the scene to find them. Even quite big artists aren't advertised. Anyway I'd recommend the big (and small) outdoor Psytrance festivals in Germany for that genre (Fullmoon Festival, Antaris Project, Vuuv Festival etc), they're quite near Berlin anyway.

Btw many of the skinheads in Berlin are not neo-nazi skinheads, some are anti-fascist communist skinheads, some are gay skinheads, some apolitical football hooligans, well they come in different types.

music in Berlin

Hello,

I'm looking for advice. I've got a weekend to spend in Berlin over the 28th-30th of July. I'm interested in experiencing some of the famous Berlin music and nightlife. I would love some specific recommendations. I'm familiar with some of the more famous places - but mostly want to experience some good music and the interesting scene and I'd actually prefer some underground type scenes. I'll be traveling alone. Thoughts are greatly appreciated.

true it will be closing along with other Berlin clubs because the government can't get a piece of their profit?

Some of the best clubs in Berlin, including Berghain and Watergate, have said they are closing down after New year if the law gets through. E.g. Watergate now pays a yearly 10 000 € fee to GEMA (the German copyright organization). This fee would be increased to 200 000 € if the law passes. The fee would be about the same with Berghain (along with many other clubs). Needless to say, this is ridiculous. Especially as GEMA does not represent the vast majority of underground electronic music producers.

The clubs would have to charge astronomical fees and only tourists willing to pay huge sums to experience Berghain (and other clubs) would come. Needless to say, this is against the whole concept of the clubs in Berlin. If the law passes, the parties will go underground.

Apart from the more well-known clubs (Berghain, Watergate, Tresor etc. although Berghain is awesome at Saturdays) there's ://about blank which is an awesome club in Ostkreuz. Highly recommended. http://aboutparty.net/

Two hundred thousand, 200,000 (didn't know you write it that way). But yes, it's an insane sum for electronic music clubs and would be a deathblow for many clubs.

Hi, try //about:blank (yes, that's the name of the club). It really feels like going back in the times to warehouse raves. The place is awesome. It's a quite politically active club with a strong left/anarchist vibe, but once inside the club there's really no politics involved (on the other hand, how many Bluelighters are right-wing and not anti-fascist? Not many I believe...). It's in Ostkreuz, the club is in an old abandoned industrial factory (like many of the clubs in Berlin, e.g. Berghain and Tresor). They have different musical themes for different days, but on Fridays and Saturdays you can be quite sure it's Techno and/or Deep/Tech House. There are often quite well-known international DJ's playing there but the club keeps a quite low profile. What's especially cool about //about:blank is the garden!. It's absolutely awesome. There are DJ's playing in the garden too.

The official webpage

Some info on Resident Advisor about the club.

Edit: LOL, I've already answered your post, this is how it's like with a bad memory...Anyway Berlin still has the best Techno clubs in the world, I'm sure you'll find some good clubs. But e.g. Berghain and Tresor are still as good as it can get, despite them being well-known and hence big tourist attractions.

Edi2: I just came back from a week in Berlin and all I can say is, it's dope. It's not a beautiful or picturesque city, especially the Eastern side with its communist-era buildings are downright ugly. But it's the vibe and atmosphere in the city that is truly unique. If you think Amsterdam is a liberal city, Berlin is going to surprise you. Besides foreigners are not allowed to enter coffee shops in the Netherlands anymore, nor are foreigners allowed to buy cannabis. The residents must now have a "weed pass" to get into coffee shops. Berlin is more liberal when it comes to cannabis than the Netherlands. But that's only a small point. The city is itself extremely liberal and no one cares how you dress, if you're straight or gay or black or white or neon green (there are exceptions, of course, some parts like Lichtenberg has its share of neo-nazis but why go there anyway?). I think this has to do with the generally left-leaning, even anarchist vibe and politics. There are lots of demonstrations and unlike most other places, they actually often have effect. Alcohol is sold 24/7 in stores and kiosks which, surprise surprise, are open 24/7. Alcohol is insanely cheap, you can get 0,5 l beer for 0,60€ (and that's good beer, not any B-class beer), drinking in public is both legal and widely practiced. Yup, you can drink in the subway too. The legal drinking age is 16. My advice is skip the main tourist attractions (well, they are maybe worth one visit) and explore the more gritty places. Fans of graffiti and street art would love the place. There are graffiti's everywhere, in all possible and impossible places. Berlin is not heaven on earth, but a damn cool city that's my #1.

I went to an outdoor party at about:blank and enjoyed it. Some other clubs that i liked were cdv (club der visionaire) which is a teeny tiny little spot on the water. I think about 20 people can fit inside this little closet and the rest can chill out the deck that wraps around. Great music though and close to Arena and not far from Renate (also one of my faves). Kater Holzig opened my last weekend there, which is run by (and across the river from) the old Bar 25.

Here's a Resident Advisor video that shows some of the clubs like Tressor and Renate.

Oh and the sound at Berghain is simply devine. I love being able to stand right by the speakers and not feel the need to put in earplugs.
