Is it normal for benzos to suppress appetite?

I'd sort of expecting it, since it had become obvious that much of my junk food eating was due to anxiety (it lessened it). But I had not expected it to be so dramatic.

Or maybe it could be the Tramadol.

I get really bad (or really good I guess :)) munchies from benzos. On Tramadol I will hardly eat at all. YMMV though..my friend who has suffered from an eating disorder in the past asked me for Klonopin once to calm her down and reduce her appetite (she binges & purges so wanted to get down to a normal appetite). Weird..almost everyone I know gets benzo munchies.

Yes, I can see now, it's definitely the Tramadol.
Almost worth it just for that!

BTW, I know nothing about diet pills, do they work?

Actually, ANYTIME I take a Xanax I get extremely hungry!!! Within 30 minutes, my stomach will be growling! Go figure...

Benzos have never effected my appetite, I have been on Klonopin daily for the past 2 years (1-5mg/day|Currently 1mg) and never experienced any changes in my appetite. I have also been on Xanax and Ativan as needed and havn't had any appetite stimulation nor depression.
Benzos have a wide range of effects on the body from person to person, as you see it makes some people not hungry, some hungry, some very hungry, and some it doesn't effect at all.

P.S. If you could give us some more information (basic background info) about the other meds your on, what benzo your own, what the dose is, and how long you have been on it, etc. etc. than you will get much much much more specific help and better answers.

almost EVERYONE I KNOW and the majority of the people on BL and especially me it makes me eat, and eat a lot.

I have high anxiety so its hard for me to eat when by BP is up and my heart rate (sitting heart rate) is between 100-125 BPM with my normal dose without xanax by BPM heart rate is usually 115-145. And with a high dose of xanax (not my 1 mg X 3 day) i mean 10-14mg my heart rate is between 60-75 and that relaxes me and makes me hungry.

Same goes for opiates i get starving on opiates because they reduce anxiety for me and probably lower my heart rate but i have tested it because i dont do opiates anymore except MMT. and after my dose i can eat breakfast but before my dose i couldnt eat a thing.

I guess thats why i put on 61 lbs in two years used to be 124 now im 185 and 6 feet tall and 27 years old. before years 25 to years 15 or so when i was 6 feet i was always hovering around 124-133

Amphetamines do. I think Caffeine does to some extent also. Well, they suppress appetite, but that doesn't necessarily promote weight loss.

yes! wow i cant believe other people get hungry from benzos too! i do extremely worst than pot or anything else. i can eat enough for three people after 4mg xanax and a nice joint. nothing in the world makes me more hungrier but the problem is i hate the eat after taking benzos because it lessens the effects for me

i eat like a fucking maniac on benzos, uncontrollable. Anything and everything

OOOOOOOOOOMMMM NOM NOM NOM NOM

When I was taking benzos my appetite was not increased now that I have gotten off [klonopin, ativan, etc.] I find that my appetite has greatly decreased. Part of it is most likely that I have had no energy/motivation to do much of anything [<-dual effect?->] hence I dont have that aspect to increase my appetite. Food is just unappealing and well a chore to eat lately, sounds twisted but it is the truth. I have been drinking Ensure to help combat the low calorie intake but I dont know...

Peace,
Seedless

I would most deffinently say its the Tramadol.. Tramadol in particular suppresses my hunger while basically all bensodiazepines makes me hungry as a friggin bull on cannabis munchies.

benzos normally make me hungry almost like weed

Me too, man they didn't use to but lately they have been givin me hella munchies. I quit taking them after being prescribed for two years (2mg/Day), started again 4 months later and ever since have been hungry when ever I take some xanax lately.

More of the "munchies" than weed gave me when I smoked it. I don't get it, but w/e it's straight. Only thing is I don't know if it lowers the amount of buzz I get, it's hard to say. Anyways I'm gonna go get some food. LOL

And I'll be going off my clonazepam again... seizures are a fairly good way to suppress ones appetite. Now whats this tramadol stuff? Does it work as well as cocaine for appetite? Cuz if I got a prescribed regulated medication instead of god-knows-what on the street that would be harm reduction, correct? ;)

(Sorry a bit off topic but ALMOST had my physician prescribe me dexedrine under the same concept but it was a little too controversial since I have an eating disorder so Im looking for something that she could better justify to replace blow...would tramadol be appropriate?)

^Tramadol is a drug that is primarily used an analgesic however it also produces Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibition (SNRI) like several psychiatric medications.

Some examples of other medications that produce SNRI effects are tricyclic anyidepressants (such as Elavil/amitriptyline, Pamelor/nortriptyline, Anafranil/clomipramine) and newer medications such as Cymbalta/duloxetine, Effexor/venlafaxine and Pristiq/desvenlafaxine.

The effects on norepinephrine produces a mild stimulant effect and also likely explains the appetite suppression that it produces for some. Although tramadol is unscheduled in most places, generally doctors are aware of its abuse potential. Tramadol has been used off-label for indications such as OCD, depression/anxiety and even premature ejaculation but given its abuse potential, its very rare that doctors will prescribe this for indications other than pain unless all other safer options have been exhausted.

Replacing dangerous, unregulated illicit substances with regulated, marginally safer ones might be harm reduction but this is not an argument that will persuade most physicians. If your physician is aware of a history of both substance abuse and an eating disorder, this makes it even less likely that she'd be willing to prescribe this.

Lastly, tramadol substantially lowers the seizure threshold so should not be used in any proximity to benzodiazepine discontinuation. The FDA limits the amount of tramadol that can be taken daily to 400mg total (starting doses are 50-100mg) due to seizure risk which would be substantially greater if you're coming off clonazepam.
