Benzos benzos and hydroxyzine

Hi Captain Heroine,

I read that you recommend hydroxyzine for anxiety when coming off benzo's. I am in Australia and my GP does not know of this ant-histamine. Could you please advise if I can source it in Australia and if I need a script?

You can search "pbs" on google and access the pharmaceutical benefits scheme. There, you can search for any medicine that is available on prescription here - but I'm not sure about OTC meds. For those, you could just call a pharmacist and ask.

I recently came off benzos and even more recently off bupe; I found immensely helpful the OTC med doxylamine succinate (called 'restavit'). I used it for sleep mainly but I've heard you can use it for anxiety.

Also, you can get pretty potent valerian root formulations here from most chemists. Good luck man!!

If you can't get hydroxyzine, try doxylamine or diphenhydramine?

Try searching for the brand names Serecid or Atarax, otherwise you could use a more common first generation antihistamine like diphenhydramine (benadryl).

Hey, I noticed I never responded.

Anyways, doxylamine is definitely a good choice, it is more sedating than hydroxyzine.

is there any reason to be perscribed this for benzo withdrawal? my mom has been on 3 mgs of xanax/day for like 5+ years now.. about a year back she told her docter that she'd start withdrawaling between her doses and for the withdrawal he gave her a script for hydroxizine instead of upping her xanax (which is a good thing) but how does hydroxizine work for a benzo withdrawal is what confused me
