I have always known that Benzodiazepines help in reducing the negative side effects of alcohol withdrawal but after doing some minimal research, I still have a few questions.

Everything I have read so far states that Benzo's are used to reduce the chance of seizures and the escalation to Delirium Tremors. I have also read that they help to alleviate the other symptoms of alcohol WD but what exactly does this mean? Are all of the symptoms reduced or only a select few? Would it be possible for someone with mild, moderate or sever WD to have a painless detox with the use of Benzo's?

Lastly, why is it that Benzo's will help with alcohol WD but not vice versa?

Thanks in advance!

I don't think there is any such thing as a painless detox. But I believe benzos help soften the symptoms of withdrawal.

I don't think it will remove them completely. It'll definately help but theres no such thing as a totally painless detox unless you are unconcious. It just makes the days much easier. You will still feel the WD's though, even if it's just a little.

^^agree, completely.

Benzos seem the preferred choice in the management of alcohol withdrawal syndrome..
esp. for the prevention of seizures and in avoiding delirium.
But they can only make w/d more safe/tolerable.
The emotional/mental part of any w/d is what I believe is the hardest part..
and unfortunately, seems to also be an inesacapable one.
Most successful detoxes , IMO are the direct result of a strong will.
To be able to have these tools to make the physical w/d a little easier to handle..
will also allow for the individual to be able to focus on the goal at hand,
rather than the hell that physical w/d can be.

If detox were to be painless...I think it would also end up pointless, honestly.
