Benzodiazepine Question for People Who Never/Rarely Abused Their Prescription.

Diazepam comes in 2mg aswell as 5mg and 10mg, according to a search of the internet.
Pagey - In UK we use the vegetable phrase too.

I've been taking 2mg of Clonazepam (the prescribed dose) daily for going on 20 years. I'm unsure of what the long term effects will be but thus far cognitive impairment and memory loss are a non issue. I'll probably get around to tapering off them in the near future but I function perfectly normal at present.

I have been prescribed Alprazolam .5mg for about 10 years. In all that time the highest dosage I have taken in 1 day is .75mg, so I'm not sure if that can be seen as abusing ;) I'm also prescribed a longer acting benzo, clorazepate, which comes as 15mg in a XR version. Never took more than intended.

These are rxd to take on an as needed basis for social/generalized/anticipatory anxiety and I rarely take them 2 days in a row so .5mg of Alprazolam still works just fine, even .25mg can be enough in some situations. Also the clorazepate still does what it needs to do in one single 15mg dose.

I'm sure if I had taken these daily that I would be in a world of trouble now with my anxiety probably being even worse but at the rate I take them they have helped me through quite some situations.

Long-term benzo use is known to cause brain damage. Well at least long-term temazepam use has caused organic brain damage. I'm assuming that other benzos are capable of producing this, especially the hypnotics.

Abusing benzodiazepines will lead to them becoming ineffective within a matter of a few days, possibly a day or less if you're using a short lived one at an exceptionally high frequency.

When using them once a day, in my experience, the tolerance will begin to build slowly around the first week. I haven't ever taken a benzodiazepine daily longer than a week so far.

Aside from the loss of efficacy, having to come off of benzodiazepines, at any rate, will not be a pleasant experience.

Got it. Not planning to go on them regularly unless absolutely necessary, which is probably isn't right now. Thanks for all of the responses.

No problem!

Unless you have abused benzos to this degree, or witnessed someone do this (in my case, I witnessed someone do this...) it can be hard to imagine that someone would eat a month's prescription in a matter of days, but it does happen.

I will also point out that if you begin to use benzodiazepines more frequently than you ever have before, if it is going to start causing rebound anxiety or whatever, you will notice this fairly quickly in my opinion. After a traumatic incident, I relied somewhat heavily on alprazolam for about 5 days. When I quit using it, I didn't taper or anything I just stopped abruptly (not a good idea for people who have used benzodiazepines for longer than this!) - and I noticed the rebound anxiety for a few days afterwards. It wasn't horrible for me, and I was already anxious to begin with so I rode it out.

If you do notice the rebound anxiety beginning, definitely take your chance to get away from benzodiazepine use while you still have it. Some people figure out how bad benzodiazepine dependency is the hard way, and it's a really unfortunate way to figure that out.

I was just wondering, I am well aware of mg scales and their availability. But I was under the impression it would only be effective if u were working with pure Valium powder not the pill form commonly found.

You just have to use proportions to figure it outl. If a 2mg pill weighs 50mg, then 1mg of Valium would weigh 25mg, .5mg of Valium would weigh 12.5mg, etc....

Benzos dosed continiously will not lose their efficacy in controlling anxiety and panic in a matter of days! That is just false. With any drug there is some rapid tolerance developed after the first dose if one continues to re-dose, but this is to be expected - it does not indicate a loss of efficacy of the drug.

EXACTLY

Alcohol does... most GABA drugs do... Benzos are NOT an exception to the rule.

Please don't abuse your gaba receptors.

i been addicted to benzos since 2008, you name it i been RXed it, all by my SUBOXONE DR, out of all doctors he should of known better, started me on valium, let me switch to xanax if i wanted, then i went to klonopin. i never knew how addictive these are, i cant even live a happy life being dependent on benzos, im on 4-6mg klonopin daily, and boy im scared to death of WD. i went cold turkey in jail once and didnt know that taking 4mg of xanax a day would effect me. i lost 6 days of sleep, literally went psychotic and insane with hallucinations that everyone was trying to kill me, i had to be transported to the hospital for detox. i lost my mind and believed it, i thought the FEDS raided my house while i was in jail and they scared my dad he had a heart attack and died, and i got charged with murder, it was so scary, after that all i had was nightmares of death..im so SCARED to go down that road again but i want to. i just WILL NOT let this detox there treat me like a test dummy, and just give me pheno barb for 3 days and release me, im sure there is still gonna be alot of serious WD even after that, i wont allow myself to do it

I would just like to point out that though government refusal to disclose a trove of statistics on those who use benzodiazepines and meta studies indicate that they probably do cause brain damage if used long-term, the jury is likely still out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-term_effects_of_benzodiazepines.

And 1-2 drinks of alcohol per day is supposed to improve an adult's being mentally and physically.

I've been prescribed benzos for over 5 years now, and as long as the dose has been low ( I'm talking 1mg of Xanax a day or less, or 10mg of diazepam a day) I haven't noticed any problems with my cognitive function.

When I was on higher doses of 3mg of Xanax a day it was easy to be in a brain fog, and just float through the day without paying attention to much. It was also more difficult to concentrate or remember things.

However, those problems seemed to be short-term, and since tapering down to low doses I have not had any issues with congnitive function. I have the best memory in my family, yet I am the only one that has taken benzodiazepines, or any meds for that matter. They have all said that I'm the best driver, and although I'm not the smartest in terms of SAT scores, I think that I have the best all around knowledge.

I'm not trying to toot my own horn here. I just wanted to show a benzo vs no benzo comparison between people sharing the same genes.

In Australia, the 2mg strength pill has a score, so you can easily break it into half to get 1mg. Anything lower than that wouldn't always be guaranteed, as the amount of the drug may not be spread evenly if broken less than made. (ie full tablet, scored etc). Hope that makes sense :)

well i guess the proportions work, but in all practical sense, it seems somewhat unwieldy and prone to error if there is not a perfect distribution of active ingredient in the pills. oh well Im done thinking about it time to go smoke 8)

i also been on benzos since 2008, going on 5 years almost, my suboxone doc gave me Valium for anxiety, switched to klonopin, then xanax, then my family doctor took over and i was on 2mg twice a day kpin. of course i was taking more than RXed, my tolerance truely skyrocketed, i got to a point where i can take 10-15 xanax bars and be just mellow. even going weeks or months without benzos, my tolarence seemes permanetly messed up...2mg is usually what it takes to feel the "relief"...im down to 1mg kpin daily..

I know that i will be on (a) Drugs for the rest of my life. i have accepted this fact.

Furthermore, I Take benzos a little too often probably because i have anxiety n sich...They wold be effective but they wont give me enough of a dose and im scared to ask for more!! 1mg Ativan 2x a day..nuuh

Honestly i wish they would just write me a script for oxycodone..at least that way i would be a pill head AND happy, not just a pill head who wonders how much more i have to take before i experience relief..

Personally i thinkn benzos and ssris or whatever are NEARLY as addicitive as opiates...So docs cut the shit give me what WORKs and stop wasting my time if i have to get addicted to a drug it should at least get me high AM I WRONG??!

I have used a few more than prescribed only a few times in the 5 years or so that I've been on 1.5 mg/day of xanax. I started having worsening anxiety in the last few months between doses and switched to the same dosage of klonopin, which are, AFAK, the same strength, though klonopin lasts longer. I didn't read this whole thread, but there's my short answer to your question. What I'm on now works great.

Do you notice any cognitive issues whatsoever (however small)? Worsening anxiety overall?

No cognitive issues have been noticed. I'm a classical musician, and a brain-trainer actually. So either it hasn't affected me cognitively or my cognitive "work outs" have kept those at bay.

Only when I quit using poppy pods (basically opiates) did I get worsening anxiety. To be expected. I got anxiety between my xanax doses, but like I said, switched to k-pin and have had no problems. Still at 1.5 mg/day, as I have been for years and years.

Short answers though would be no, and no.
