Im moving to a job which is 28 days on the job 14 off with 6 hour shifts and then 6 off im currently on klonopin but with this new job I need something with possibly less sedation and also possibly a shorter half life any ideas or suggestsions as my psychiatrist will prettymuch write me what ever I want if I give a valid reason.

Hi Eur0, welcome to BDD!

It's really best to discuss this with your psychiatrist as they (should be) an expert in prescribing benzos to suit your needs..

However In would take a look at this benzo comparison chart and this half-life megathread.

We don't allow "how can i get my doctor to prescribe x" threads (check the gudelines in my sig) and really something like this comes down to personal choice and a discussion between you and your doctor over what woud be the best choice for you, but this is borderline so I'll leave it open for a bit (it may not stay open that long as we've had a lot of threads on this topic however) and see if anyone has any suggestions for you. It depends what you use it for - anxiety or sleep - and how important it is that you aren't groggy at work, really..

Agreed. Your psychiatrist will be able to find a medication tailored for your needs. Personally though, I think diazepam (valium) would be a nice fit. It doesn't give nearly as much lethargy as other benzos in my experience.

You need to tell us why you need them at all for us to tell you which would suit anyway. Wether you need a short half-life hypnotic or anxyiolitic... Makes a lot of difference.

You also need to tell us dosage etc to truly understand.

Besides it's better to talk to your doctor. He has the script pad ;).

Im on 2mg kpins and I want something with an anxiotylic not sure if thats correct spelling.

2 mg Xanax is equal to 1 to 2 mg of Klonipin, that might be a rather good choice.

Me, I'd get xanax.Ativan might be a good one, it's less sedating than xanax and short acting. If you don't want a high and just want an anti-anxiety drug with a short half life, low sedation, you should get oxazepam.

Does it have to be a benzo, or would hydroxyzine, buspar, or an anti-depressant due?

You must be in the states, they seem to hand out Benzos like we hand out SSRI's in the UK, I know which I prefer:)

Jeez, 42 years of taking Valium everyday! Surely that can't be good for anyone, I thought there were guidelines for the prescribeing of benzos long term.
How do you feel about the length of time you have been taking them,if you don't mind me asking?

Im on a standing script now for the last ten years.
As the benzos outweigh any kind of withdrawl.
I tried tappering down and then stopping, but it almost killed me!
That was the year 2001.
Wish i had never taken a valium my friend.

These sound like sensible choices, although im not too clued up on the Hydroxyzine or Burspar.

Ativan (IMO/IME) is very very subtle almost to the point that i could happily go without it (then again i am on 150mg ER per day Venlafaxine) which after just over 2 months of use actually feels like its beginning to work :)

I agree that Alprazolam (Xanax) can be very sedating and hard hitting even though its a shorter duration Benzo....Oxazepam sounds like an ok choice though.

Do you guys in the states never get scripted Cliotazepam or Etizolam? Either of them may suit your needs, in fact i think you can actually get hold of Etizolam without a prescription, and i dont mean street dealer, i mean legally obtained on the net.

Good luck ;)

Short term = Benzos

Medium term = Benzos can start to cause trouble.

Long term = Anti - Depressants anyday! SSRI's/SNRI's anything other than long term benzo use. *just IME)

Yes I guess the long term usage has kind of left you in a difficult situation now in regards as trying to get off them.
As long as they haven't made things worse for you then I guess that's what counts.
I wish you well and good health my friend.

I would be concerned going from clonazepam (Klonopin) - a very long acting anxiolytic (half-life 18-50 hours) to alprazolam (Xanax) - a very short acting anxiolytic, unless that is specifically what you want. They both provide anxiolysis; different people prefer different ones and it does depend heavily on how long you want it to last. Lorazepam is a good medium-duration anxiolytic..

I also agree that benzos long-term are not a good solution due to tolerance, dependence, impaired cognition etc but this is something to discuss with your doctor :)

This thread is quite subjective really - as you can see, we can't tell you exactly what is best for your individual situation, plus it's more of a medical query.. I'm going to close it, but feel free to shoot me a pm if you have any queries.
