Benefits of grass fed beef over grain fed beef

I'm into raw, grass fed cheese and milk. It has similar benefits of grain vs grass meat. Ferment that into keifer and your really talking.

The cows that we know today didn't exist, but cows most certainly did exist in some form, or else we wouldn't have them at all. :P

Exactly. It's roughly the same as comparing Dingoes and Kelpies. Their diets may be slightly different, but they are related genetically, and it's only because we have gotten them used to different foods that they now somewhat suffice as a substitute for their regular diet of [Insert any animal they can kill here]. So assuming this, feeding your dog raw or rotten meat, is not a bad thing. Note: Those idiots who buy "fancy" dog/cat food and think that their dog/cat ACTUALLY likes and benefits from it more than anything they would find in the wild...

... Cows are herbivores.

Well, this is the best way to eat meat. Cows are happier and healthier pasteuring on grass. Warehouse raised stuff is awful and given steroids and antibiotics like Cipro. Cows fed corn and wheat make poops that smell horrible while cows raised on grass have poop that barely smells like anything. I know this from work experience and saw first hand that cows can't really eat anything but grass and be healthy.

I've worked with cows that were fed a combination of grass and whole grains. They were penned up but outside with a roof. I would say their manure was not what you would find in a field (basically a dried grass patty) but not necessarily the most disgusting thing ever. It was odd for me as we would spend half of our day feeding these cows grass and grains by hand, and the other half mowing grass in orchards with machines.....It seems like there is a better way.

I worked on a natural pasture. It wasn't organic due to fertilizer being applied to grow the hay, but otherwise free of any other stuff. I did have to drive by a farm that had less land and fed them grains and the smell would knock you out on my way to work. I didn't ever work in one of these bigtime factory jobs but I've read lots about it and could only imagine...

Really these days I rarely eat any other meat other than fish cause the slaughtering process is gruesome no matter how you look at it.

We have recently been eating steaks from Whole Foods which I'm fairly certain are grass-fed in origin and they have been delicious. <3

It shouldn't come as a shock to anyone that feeding animals a completely unnatural diet results in less healthy animals and hence less healthy meat! And perhaps of equal importance, less happy cows!

It's common sense.

Yet, somehow I still have not convinced my parents to buy grass fed beef. They complain that the meat is tougher, and tastes too strong. Or something.

You know, personally, the joy and satisfaction in knowing that I'm doing the best I can for my body, for the livestock, and for the environment, is MUCH richer than any satisfaction I can possibly hope to get out of something as selfish and superficial as the subtle flavors and textures of my food. Apparently some people think differently. 8)

and the satisfaction you get from telling others about what you're doing for your body, the livestock and the environment can't hurt either. that way no one will ever mistake you for someone who is selfish or superficial.

@thread - corn-fed tastes better. my local supermarkets got flooded with USDA prime recently so it's been a very delicious week.

I thought so too... You'd think the news would be proving that this is not the case, rather than vice versa.

What are you tripping on? No one said they weren't...

No, but I didn't realize what Dingoes and Kelpies were, so I assumed he was talking about the cows eating whatever animal it can kill for food, which would be none because they are herbivores.

I used them as an example due to the fact that they are genetically related. Probably not the best example haha :)

Trying to earn coolness points is NOT the right reason to eat a healthier and more ethical diet. This is about giving life and nourishment to your body, and respecting the animals that allow you this privilege -- not getting into hip and trendy circles.

I wish more people shied away from trends and focused more on what they wish to do by their own knowledge and research. Many people, like you've mentioned, follow the status quo even if they disagree a little with it. Driving past family farms in Western New York has helped me see the benefits of animals roaming around the pasture, both for my body and for their bodies.

Side story that kind of relates: There's a man who owns a calf and a cow about a mile from where I live. The one time while walking my dog, I stopped to get a good look at the cows (for once they were close enough to the road). They were significantly thinner than the pictures of cows I've seen, and thinner still than the cows at the farm where my brother worked about a decade ago. However, they did not look sickly--They looked, I'm guessing, how a cow is supposed to look. Plump, but nowhere near obese.

These cows, I'm assuming, are grass-fed as they roam in an open field the majority of the day. The field is approximately three acres.

My biggest "beefs" are still the use of antibiotics, especially types like cipro, which has ruined peoples bodies, and the not so strict management of mad cow disease. I've read that there are many times certain suspect cattle that shouldn't be making into the food supply are. But, even more lining these poor things up to be routinely murdered is way creepy. Killing a cow never makes normal people hungry it seems.
