Ben: Diary Of A Heroin Addict

As a bright schoolboy from a loving, middle-class family Ben Rogers was expected to make a success of his life. Raised in a quiet, picturesque village Ben was a Boy Scout, loved cricket, played in the school orchestra and looked forward to the annual family holiday. But despite his privileged start in life Ben found himself on the road to ruin, injecting heroin up to four times a day.

During his last months, Ben kept a video diary of his drug use and desperate attempts to come off heroin. Ravaged by the drug, Ben’s body began to break down: he developed DVT and his veins were rendered so useless he had to inject into his groin. Despite his family’s best efforts, Ben couldn’t stop. He was haunted by, and hooked on, heroin.

Ben: Diary of A Heroin Addict charts his lies and manipulation as he mixes his next hit whilst telling his mother Anne he is clean and making a new start. It reveals Annes anger and tears as Ben loses his fight against the drugs and shows how father Mikes unconditional love continues undiminished as they are forced to deal with their sons addiction.

Director Olly Lambert comments: It’s incredibly rare to come across such raw and unflinching footage of a man so close to an abyss. I was speechless when I first watched it. I hope the film finishes what Ben had begun: to give people a visceral understanding of the nature of addiction. It has been a privilege to try and unpick who Ben really was using the intimate legacy hes left behind.

“I hope to god you look at these videos and see what a mess I got myself into.” Ben Rogers.

is this what was aired on tv in the uk??? if so i think i may have watched it. gripping stuff..quite sad to watch.

I don't need to watch these kinda documentaries. I only need to look at my own life, and the lives of my friends.

Yes xpensiv, it is. Because he filmed it himself you get very close to his life. Sweet P, I'm sorry to hear that. I feel like this film could help people who haven't done H to stay away from the stuff because it shows the dark side of addiction in a very dramatic way. Of course I can only speak for myself but I needed the break from all the junky movies that make addiction look romantic.

A good reminder to myself that I'm not missing out on anything but death from not touching heroin. This is the type of shit the government has a right to show; not other bullshit scare tactics.

This is such a sad film. I watched it with my mum and while it made me feel really uncomfortable and she was in tears, I think it was a good thing for her to see some of the complex nature of addiction.

Rest in peace, Ben...hopefully your story will touch many others lives and your struggle won't be in vain (no pun intended). It's definitely reaffirmed my decision to drastically cut back/stop most substances.

I've started watching this twice and haven't been able to finish watching. It is really fucking sad, he seemed like such a good guy, just miserably stuck in addiction. The shooting up in the groin is tough for me to watch and sit still.... ugh.

Drugs are fun, but addiction is no joke. It can and will try to destroy you - and the longer you are around, the more you'll see friends/family getting destroyed by it.

very sad film.

i can't believe he died in rehab! i thought opiate WD wasn't fatal.... but it says his brain aneurysism was caused by opiate WD... ? that's scary.

also he looks like he is in his 50s, and he's 32... !

That was incredibly moving; that has shown me how my life could have turned out, but I'm 4 months clean now - and hopefully will be until the day i die, which I promise myself will have nothing to do with the hideous, soul destroying dragon that is Heroin.

He also abused benzos, and alcohol which can cause death during withdrawal

If you dont want to watch all 40 minutes of it just watch the last part of the video 5/5. That will make you want to stop fucking with all this shit forever.

I've watched this before. It is really sad. His dad is dying and he is trying to get clean for him and the w/ds actually kill him.
Just breaks your heart.

Exactly...a very true statement. The life of an opiate addict is 10% ecstasy and 90% misery and torture. This documentary really captured the dark side, even if most junkies never get as bad as this guy. But its required viewing for anyone who wants to try dope.
