This is a basic overview of different techniques used to ingest psychoactive substances.
Oral- This is to swallow a variety of drugs, such as pills, mushrooms, alcohol, etc. This method is usually the safest, takes more of a substance t be effective than other methods, and is generally the longest onset, and duration. Noticeable effects tend to start between 30-60 minutes after ingestion. Oral administration generally has less negative health effects associated with drug use. The drugs are swallowed and absorbed by the the digestive system, mostly in the stomach and small intestine. Please not that when using pharmaceutical pills, some have time release mechanism. Learn about what you are taking, and how the time release mechanism works, so that you know how much exactly you are putting in your body at a given time. Most often by crushing/breaking the pill the time-release is destroyed. However this is not always the case! "Parachuting" is a type of oral administration in which the drugs are crushed up into a fine powder and wrapped in toilet paper, rolling paper, etc and then swallowed. This leads to slightly stronger effects and a quicker onset, because your body does not have to break the substance down as much.
Sublingually- THis method is similar in mechanism to rectal administration in my opinion. You take your drug and set it under your tounge, and allow it to be absorbed by membraneous lining as well as the thick veins that run through that area. In this way it bypasses the stomach and digestive system, allowing more drug to reach the body quicker. The onset will be much quicker and more efficient than when taken orally. IMO the only downside to this route is that some drugs such as MDMA, opiates, and benzos do not have the qreatest taste. I have also found that using a small amount of water helps the solution dissolve more readily. *Please note this is mainly a ROA for pils, powders, and liquids, but can be usedin other ways as well
Intranasally- This method is the same as insufflating, snorting, sniffing, or blowing. It is usually used to refer to the snorting of a substance, so that it is absorbed by the lining of the nostrils. This method is generally stronger than oral administration, and has a quicker onset, as well as a shorter duration. Typically you will start to feel effects within 5-10 minutes. When snorting powders, switching nostrils between many small lines tends to provide better absorption than railing a giant line to look cool in front of your friends. I have also found that my applying a small amount of water to my nostrils after snorting helps increase absorption as well as keeps my nose from bleeding and/or clogging with continued use. This method may lead to sinus problems, nose bleeds, and in severe cases a deviated septum.
Smoking- This method tends to provide almost instantaneous effects, and usually requires less material for the same effect as oral and intranasal use. When smoking you want to inhale as much of the smoke that you comfortably can and hold it in your lungs, where it is then absorbed into your bloodstream. If you are new to smoking, try to hold it in for at least 3-5 second count to get effects. As your lungs become accustomed to smoke, you can try to hold it in longer for better absorption. Vaporizing is a healthier form of smoking. It technically isn't smoking, but rather melting the substance and inhaling the vapors before it gets hot enough to burn, which produces smoke. Some substances such as Crack or DMT are useless when burned, so be careful. People use joint, blunt wraps, homemade bongs from soda bottles and other objects, bowls, bongs, pipes, glass "rose" stems, and many other tools to smoke different drugs. Be careful as smoking can lead to overdose in severe cases, because of the quick onset, but this mostly associated with more dangerous drugs such as Crack or PCP. Smoking can lead to health problems such as respiratory complications, and damage to the lungs. Certain substances such as tobacco are known to be very cancerous when smoked.
Intravenous- This method is to inject into the veins. This method generally produces the strongest effects. Other terms for Intravenous drug use are IV, banging, shooting, mainlining, etc. It is also associated very heavily with addiction and health problems. When injecting remember that it is different than getting IV drugs in the hospital. Hospitals use special preparations meant for IV use, and are sterile and pure. Street drugs and pharmaceutical pills are not sterile or ready for injection, and it is dangerous. However, people will always use this method. If you must inject, do it as safely as possible. Before injecting get the following supplies- alcohol wipes, distilled water, 28-31gauge 1cc or 1/2 cc insulin syringes, a clean spoon, q-tip/cotton ball, lighter or candle, and a belt or something to "tie off" with. Wipe down the spoon with the alcohol swab, and the injection site. The easiest place to inject for first timers is the crook of the arm. Place the powdered substance to inject in the spoon. Take the syringe and pull up about 70-80 units of distilled water and then squirt it into the spoon with the powder. Then mix the solution together for about 10 seconds with the end of the syringe (plunger). If you are injecting pills, then you should have used hot water, if using street drugs then put the spoon over a flame and heat it to help dissolve the solution, to remove some impurities, and to destroy bacteria. Be careful to not directly apply flame too close or for too long, 5-10 seconds is usually good. Then take the cotton off the end of a q-tip, ball it up, and drop it in the solution. It should instantly absorb all the liquid up. Proceed by sticking the needle into the cotton ball and slowly pulling up on the plunger until all of the liquid has been transferred into the barrel of the syringe. Turn it upside down and give it a few flicks to bring the air to the top and push the plunger until the air is all ejected from the syringe. Your shot is now ready. Tie off your arm tightly and find your vein. Insert the needle almost parallel to the vein and push in. Once you are in, pull back on the plunger slightly until you see a squirt of blood come into the barrel of the syringe. This means you are in the vein, now slowly depress the plunger until all the solution is in your vein. Untie your arm, and then take the needle out. After you can even put a band-aid or whatnot on to try and keep it clean and heal quicker, which can sometimes keep health up and prevent/slow the formation of track marks. *When injecting pills, use a .22 micron filter, or if you don't have access, be sure to filter a few times with the cotton, because of all the binders and fillers in pills that you DO NOT want in your veins! Injecting drugs is dangerous! Overdoses can easily happen when using this ROA. Never share needles! You run a high risk of catching HIV, Hep C, and other diseases. Abscesses can form when injecting drugs, usually with the help of bacteria. If not treated this can lead to consequences such as LIMB AMPUTATION and DEATH!
Intramuscular- This method is very similar to IV injection, except that you are injecting into your muscle instead of your vein. The risks are similar to IV use, and you should only use this route if you really have a full understanding of what you are doing. Do not shoot pills via IM injection! Most drugs are used IV, but some examples of IM use could include Ketamine, Codeine, Diazepam, and Anabolic Steroids.
Subcutaneous- This method is also referred to as sub-cu, skin-popping, or just SC. This is not commonly used, and is usually not practical. It is merely injecting under the skin. It can happen if one misses his/her vein or if someone has been shooting drugs for a long time and can not find a vein this can sometimes happen as well. It is not effective nor pleasant, as it can burn when being injected, and forms a large bubble under the skin. This bubble is the drug, and generally is absorbed very slowly (approx 30-90 minutes) which makes it one of the slower methods. If you have can use drugs any other way, I would probably go ahead and suggest doing so.
Rectal- The taboo ROA! Most people don't like to talk about or admit to using drugs via rectal administration. This is simply absorbing the drugs via your membranous lining of your rectum. AKA drugs in your butthole
It is also known as plugging. It is a very effective method with a high bioavailability for most drugs. In order to use this method, don't just go grab your friend's ecstasy pill and stick it in your butt. Get an oral syringe used to give babies medicine (it does not have a needle!) Go about loading the syringe similarly to IV or IM, but you don't have to worry about filtering as much. Once you have your syringe ready get some lube and coat the syringe. Make sure that you have gone to the bathroom before hand, or at least in the last two hours. Go somewhere where you can be comfortable for the next 20 minutes, maybe grab a magazine or book. Get a towel and lay it on the bed/couch. Lay on top of it and get your syringe ready. Insert the lubed up syringe a few inches into your butt, until you feel it fully in your rectum, and push the liquid through the plunger. Lay there and let it absorb for the net 20-30 minutes. Afterwards wash your syringe and your hands, and your ready to go! The onset is quick with rectal absorption, I would compare it somewhere between intranasal and intravenous ROA's.
*Before using any of these methods, do your own research and learn about the differences in bioavailability(BA) between the ROA's. Typically IV and Rectal administration have the highest BA, meaning less substance is needed to produce the same effects.*
Have fun, be safe, and learn about what you are doing to your body before you do it!
If anyone has anything to add or any discrepencies with this please post or PM me so that I can make this as accurate as possible for people. Thanks!
