After being addicted for 1.5 years, I got clean off everything - heroin, roxicodone and suboxene (I would mostly IV heroin, with IV roxies when I couldn't get dope, and suboxene when I couldn't get either). I have been clean for about a year. Today, I went to the ER because of a fever that wouldn't go away, and severe throat pain, with a badly swollen throat and lips. The doctor prescribed me antibiotics and tramadol. I have never taken tramadol, and don't know what its like. Is it a bad idea for a former opiate addict to take tramadol? I don't want to become an addict again...

I wouldn't take it if you want to stay off opiates. It could lead to relapse IMO, and you've stated you don't want to be an addict again, so don't use it - don't even keep it. Depending on the antibiotics, I am not sure which OTC painkillers like NSAID's, aspirin, and APAP would be okay to use, because I know with some antibiotics some of these should be avoided.

It never really gave me a buzz, I'd abuse them recreationally simply because they were so cheap and worthless. But for someone recovering from a serious habit they could be triggering, and tramadol is very dangerous if you take too much (can cause life-threatening seizures).

I liked tramadol quit a bit. I got it a few months back after fracturing my arm. I only used it the first few days and stopped cause I dig it too much. It's not a traditional opiate feeling- more speedy- some people hate it. But I loved it. So maybe don't try it?
