A 25-year-old Snohomish County man was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Seattle to 36 months in prison on Friday for bank robbery.

David E. Hayes, 25, of Snohomish County, was also enrolled in drug treatment in federal prison. He says that he robbed banks and espresso stands so that he could pay off drug dealers and to buy gas to get to Seattle to buy heroin.

In a plea agreement, he admitted to a crime spree began on Christmas Eve, 2008. He stole a car that day, robbed Cowgirl Espresso in Everett the following day. On Dec. 28, he hit a U.S. Bank branch in Marysville.

The new year found him at it again, robbing a U.S Bank branch on Aurora Avenue North in Seattle on Jan. 14, a Bank of America branch in Arlington on Jan. 16 and Morgan's Espresso in Mount Vernon and Washington Mutual branch in Bothell on Jan. 22.

In each robbery, he either said or wrote in a note that he was armed.

He has agreed to pay more than $4,000 in restitution to the banks and espresso stands. He wasn't charged with federal crimes for the espresso stand robberies.

A federal prosecutor asked for a sentence on the low range of the sentencing guidelines.

"David Hayes is a sad case. After years of drug addiction and petty crime, he has graduated to federal-level criminal activity. Desperate for drug money, Hayes robbed four banks and two coffee stands. Hayes may not be a violent man, but the victims of his robberies did not know that," prosecutor Mike Dion wrote in court papers.

Opiates are not dangerous or even toxic to the human body when used by intelligent standards. It is when the opiates are taken away from the person addicted to them, is when the problems start.

I hate these assholes who balme drugs for their decisions. I sympathise with dopesickness, I really do. What about the trauma caused to many people in these armed robberies he commited? There is a point where drug use is not a good enough excuse imho and when people using it they are giving the prohibitionists further ammunition to demonize drug use and drug users.

If you read the article carefully it seems he didn't commit armed robbery. He went to the cashier/teller, slipped a note that said "I have a weapon, give me x or I will hurt someone" or something to that effect. It sounds like he didn't even have a weapon with him when he committed these robberies. It's not like he ambushed a 7/11 with an assault rifle pointing it at people and firing shots into the air.

because having access to opiates all the time makes it so much easier to buy them all the time. which mean that you can get twisted all the time. which makes it so much easier to make enough money to feed the addictions which will inevitably arise.

hmm...

Even telling people you are armed is still going to cause trauma, he doesn't need to point a gun in their face for them to legitimately fear for their lives. I don't care how sick you are, it is one thing to take some material possessions, it is quite another to inflict that level of terror on another human being just so you can get your hit.
