I just did a partial shot of H. I went into my right arm top vein below bicep by bend point from forarm to bicep. The usual spot you see in the movies. Anyways I had 20cc and just did 10c. As soon as I pushed down and intense burning pain started in my fingers, then became tingling. My entire hand and most of forarm swelled up pretty dramatic and half my arm has raised areas that are extremely red. I've never in my 12 years of shorting ever had a reaction like this... Anyone else ever had this happen or know what's going on?

i've had similar reactions to the pics i see above but not as much swelling, and i was hitting veins, i know this for fact. whether you hit an artery or not I'm not sure. i always used to hit the vein farthest to the right on my right arm or farthest left on left arm. It could either be (A) a severe histamine reaction... or (B) you hit an artery. Better hope its A and not B because hitting an artery is bad news bears... watch over it for a while because if it gets worse you need a hospital visit.

Looks like a classic artery shot to me, especially because you said you felt pain when actually injecting starting in your fingers. That is a big sign you hit an artery. Next time that happens and you feel any pain when depressing the plunger, immediately stop and pull out. Do not just push through it.

Doesn't an artery shot usually require going to the hospital? I was just surprised that no one mentioned that in here..I may be wrong, if so disreguard please.
I also wasn't questioning your answer Mr. Scagnattie, I just wanted to know when a likely artery shot requires immediate medical attention?

That is an artery hit. You have to be careful. Just cause it's the spot they 'hit in the movies' doesn't mean it's 'safe'. There is a major artery that runs directly under it if I am not mistaken. I have hit an artery twice in my years of IV use it feels like an electric shock and your arm being on fire at the same time. And it will swell straight afterwards. (Like yours has) The problem with arterial hits is that if there were ANY tiny particles in your shot they can clog and cut off the blood supply to your fingers. Which if not treated can lead to amputation. There is really no way of knowing whether this is happening until it's too late. How is it now btw? I have to recommend going to hospital to get it checked out though.

For something like that, it's normally okay to give it 24 hours or so to see if the swelling/pain goes down, which it can a lot of the time after an arterial injection if the damage wasn't really bad. If you see it not getting better, or getting worse, then at that point you need to go to the hospital.

You need to look out for a feeling of weakness in your hand and ongoing paresthesia (a sensation of tingling/burning). Also discoloration or very pale finger nails. If you begin to experience these symptoms quickly and intensely, not going away or getting worse as the hours tick by, it can be a sign of necrosis.

Obviously seeking medical attention first thing is never bad. Always better to be safe than sorry. So, if after a day or so you notice things getting worse, it's important to get to a hospital immediately.

Awful superbowl half time music. Keep us posted, luckily in my years of IV use an artery shot never occurred. I'll chock it up to luck, I hope that was just a sever histamine reaction. Hope all is well..

And thank you for clarifying this.

Happened to me, TWICE. Artery shot. Also got an insane rush that wasn't fun and felt like a gunshot to the head every time my heart beat. Was scared shitless
