My advice would be better dental hygiene... Make sure you brush your teeth at least twice a day. Floss, use mouthwash after every brush. This should go a long way to helping you.

The other possibility is that it could be occuring because of something in your diet.

There are many things that can cause bad breath. Morning breath, diabetes, smoking, periodontal disease, xerostomia (dry mouth) can all be factors. I'd start by keeping your dental hygiene a priority. Brushing for 2 minutes twice a day and flossing. Making sure to brush your tongue. The bacteria that causes bad breath lives very far "back" on your tongue. So the further back you go, the better. Using a tongue scraper or Breath Rx products can help also. When in doubt, visit your dental office and ask.

^ Wow, good reply. I was thinking the original poster's bad breath is most likely being caused by gingivitis, but you came up with a really comprehensive list.

but why cant i smell it??
yes i smoke heavily....could that be it?
if i remember vaguely ppl still said i had it when i wasnt a smoker

another weird thing when i brush my teeth in the morning someone told me it still smells...and i was thinking..could it be the throat? coz i wake up and havent had anyhting to drink..so my throat is dry
meh...

maybe i should just go see a dentist

^ Aside from the list posted above, you could be housing a hidden cavity. These cavities are breeding places for bacteria, not to mention food and saliva that get stuck inside therefore causing even MORE of a bad smell.

I strongly suspect you have cavities (that you cannot feel or see...it happens). Also I floss after each meal (i am extremely fastidious about my oral health) , brush my teeth twice and scrape my tongue with a tongue cleaner. I've had 3 root canals in the past due to negligence on my part and I make sure it never happens to me again now that I've got a healthy set of chompers.

Good luck. See a dentist asap.

PS. These are your best friends.

try licking the back of your hand and wait for it to dry, then smell it.

go to the dentist...i think that's the best advice anyone can give u. We can all tell u to brush ur teeth properly and floss and brush ur tongue, but u can have another underlying problem like gingivitis, which we wouldnt know about. And gingivitis is something serious that needs to be treated ASAP because it will only get worse with time. If u see a dentist and everything is fine, the next step is to see a gastro because your bad breath might be something internal.

To add on to your mention of mouthwash. Make sure you don't use anything that has alcohol in it, it will only make it worse the next day! Use something like ACT that has fluoride in it(same thing in toothpaste). It really helps keep the bacteria at bay.

Do you by any chance have sinus problems?

also brushing your tongue will help.
Fwiw, the back of the tongue is the most suspicious culprit (and unfortunately the hardest to brush due to the gag reflex). Running some floss over the tongue before/after brushing can sometimes help mitigate this problem. Mebbe gargle with mouthwash or diluted hydrogen peroxide afterward...

What's that supposed to accomplish... that can have an odor (due to bacteria) whether someone has bad breath or not.

You have white coated tongue by the sounds of it.

It is very hard to treat, dentists will tell you that it will just go away. It won't.

Scrape your tongue with a tongue scraper
dilute 3% hydrogen peroxide 1:1 gargle with this for 1 minute
mix up saturated salt water solution and gargle with this for 1 minute

do this morning and night and after a few weeks, some say a month, your tongue will be healthy and pink again.

Most mouthwashes do seem to have alcohol in them, but only because of the publics perception that alcohol is good mouthwash. You can get alcohol free ACT as well as other mouth-washes practically anywhere though.

The alcohol completely kills off all bacteria and drys out your mouth. This disrupts the natural ecological balance in the mouth, leaving behind the perfect breeding ground for bad breath.

I suggest using the alcohol based mouthwashes once a week to really kill off bacteria. But the rest of the week use something without alcohol because it really does dry out your mouth. Make sure you brush twice a day gently for at least 2 minutes. And most importantly! Floss everyday! It really makes a difference that you would not realize until you do it.

Floss your teeth and smell the floss -- that is what your breath smells like.

I think the best advice that any of us can give is to go to your local dentist, if you can, and describe the symptoms.

We have one person telling him not to use alcohol-based mouthwash, one person telling him to, one person telling him to use diluted peroxide... so many differing opinions.

I think the standard advice still stands - brush & floss twice a day, brush your tongue - but go and see your dentist, they will be able to tell you a) what is wrong and b) what to do about it! :)

i will tell you a huge secret.. don't use fluoridated toothpaste, nor mouthwash. it has a tendency to dry your mouth out, and kill good bacteria, creating a breeding ground for bad bacterias and white film..

toms of maine is the most distributed fluoride free toothpaste i know of; this advice helped me tons. everyone should follow this advice; test it out, and get back with me.:)

That would be like saying that roughly 80% of the worlds population has dry mouth and bad breath because they use flouridated products now do they? :p
It doesn't follow. What's good for one person may not be for the next. As for me I would rather have my flouridated, triclosananed and sorbitoled toothpaste (;)) than all of those other "natural" kinds put together, because my teeth just dont feel as clean and I need that tingly clean feeling.
But thas me.
