Automatic VS Manual

i drive a stick. i love it because it's just more fun, tbh. also, my gas mileage is great. further, i have all-wheel drive and, in the snow, it just feels like a more secure driving experience.

foreigner, while learning to shift can feel daunting, in a very short time, you'll not even think about it and it will become a reflex.

yeh I learned to drive manual while bringing home my first manual car during rush hour, stalled a few times but no fatalities.

i just had to go and mention texting and driving in my last post :\

Recent legislation banning the use of handheld phones by drivers had basically no effect on the number of road accidents, according to a new study.

“If it’s really that dangerous, and if even just a fraction of people stop using their phones, we would expect to find some decrease in accidents,” says professor Daniel Kaffine, who worked on the analysis. “But we didn’t find any statistical evidence of a reduction.”

...

Various academic studies have put it on a par with drunk driving, but Kaffine and his team note that many of these studies were lab based and may have failed to reproduce the way people actually behave behind the wheel.

Mind you, not sure how much you can trust a study that's being floated on the statement that other studies are bullshit.

I would even go as far as to say that all cars should be manual by law. Why? Because texting while driving has overtaken drunk driving as the leading cause of fatal collisions in the U.S. Driving manual forces you to use both hands and both feet constantly, which improves focus on the road normally and also makes it incredibly difficult to even attempt something as reckless as texting while driving.

I never text and drive and I don't drive a manual.
I have also seen people drive manual and still text. Talk about dangerous....

I don't think your argument is valid at all.

Unless you have dyspraxia or some other condition that makes a manual too difficult, really you should be using manual. It just seems lazy to go for the automatic.

Or you learned on an automatic.....
Just because one is "harder" than the other, why should you have to go with the harder one? Why not the one that you have the most experience with and the one you feel more comfortable with?

It's definitely great for people to be able to drive both, no doubt about that. But there is nothing wrong with only being able to drive one. If you can only drive one type, just stick with that until you learn the other.

I only know how to drive manual, don't think I want to learn how to drive automatic any time soon.

Manual. I learned on one and all of my cars have been stick shift with the exception of my Nissan Murano which was purchased 2 years ago. It's a family car.. I still miss driving a manual. I find myself still searching for the clutch. For me, I felt I had better control of the car with driving stick. Plus, I think it actually saved on gas!

An automatic licence is fine and well until your drunk mate tosses you his keys and asks you to drive them home.

Or in my situation I had a dislocated shoulder and needed a lift to the hospital. Nothing more painful than being covered in mud and blood and some automatic loser is bunny hopping your sorry arse to A&E :|

you're right, it's still possible to text and drive with manual, but it makes it harder. i have a friend who texts while driving (i chew him out all the time about it) and sometimes his phone will be blowing up right next to him and he has to wait until he comes to a light and stops before responding because both hands are busy with driving during acceleration. on a manual, texting while driving is limited to when you're stopped or going at a constant speed for a while so at the very least it prevents people from texting while accelerating

I've only ever driven manual and I don't think i'd ever want to own an automatic.
manual is more fun and isn't complicated at all.
totally agree on mandatory manual license, if you can't use something as easy to use as a manual car (versus an automatic one) you shouldn't be driving at all imho
also you should be able to drive any kind of car with a driving license, or at least the most common types.

There's your problem. There is a reason no American built car has ever won the Dakar rally
Yeah I have shade tree mechaniced enough to not stick up for modern era US vehicles. This is why I drive a hilux

My guess would be a 1998 Subaru outback. We get a poll on this thread?

I have usually driven manuals and do enjoy driving them but my most recent car is a classy sedan that I'm really liking driving. Cruising in it is a different kind of experience but still enjoyable. I wanted to have a bigger car this go around and really like the handling of the bigger sedan. I don't know how many mid-size or larger sedans have manual transmissions but I've never owned one. All of the cars I've owned with manual transmissions have been smaller and it's kind of nice to have something that doesn't drive like a go-cart for once (especially in the snow).

I had first learned to drive using vehicles with a manual transmission. The first few vehicles I had ever driven were all manual. In fact, I had never even operated an automatic until a couple years ago while staying in the United States.

To me, manual is superior to automatic. An automatic vehicle is incredibly boring to operate and isn't as engaging. Moreover, it just feels very unnatural for me to drive an automatic.
