RADIO and TV star Glenn Wheeler’s family are “shattered” the motorist who crashed into him while high was spared jail time.
And she will get her licence back in three years.
Angry colleagues of Wheeler, who was left brain damaged by the incident, also said today’s judgment was an “an insult”.
Magistrate Julie Huber handed down a seven-month suspended sentence to Deborah Anne Levy, 60, who crashed into Mr Wheeler’s scooter while cutting a corner in her van in south Sydney in January 2015.
Levy was homeless at the time of the crash and living in the van.
“Obviously we’re disappointed,” Mr Wheeler’s son Dane said.
“At the end of the day we’ve got a lady driving under the influence of drugs and she’s nearly killed somebody. She’s turned what used to be a bright, happy, successful man’s life upside down in one hit and it sucks.”
Ben Fordham, Mr Wheeler’s 2GB colleague, added: “(It’s) an insult. Glenn’s livelihood has been destroyed and the culprit escapes unpunished. If this is how justice works I give up.”
Levy pleaded guilty last year to driving under the influence of drugs and negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm after smashing into Mr Wheeler.
He was riding to work on his scooter when he was struck by Levy’s van on Woolooware Rd in Woolooware.
As Ms Huber fixed a seven month suspended jail sentence, she noted that Mr Wheeler “will suffer for the rest of his life” as a result of the crash.
“The consequences have been huge,” she said.
She said Levy’s actions “will impact Glenn and those around him, those who love and support him”.
Levy covered her head as she entered the court this morning to avoid waiting media.
