Im a huge Aussie music fan and am always keen to hear anything new of a high quality.

I am soo fuckin happy that live acts have really taken off again.

So I would love to hear about one of the more established groups or musicians you love and also one of the new up and comers that has done something for you.

Try and provide some extra info and thoughts cos i for one will be interested in your thoughts as i will be watching out for any that take my fancy.

I know they are not new but the Presets are pretty new for Aus in terms of the style..........Love the Presets. Really enjoyed there Sound relief set on Sat.

A little known group that I strongly urge you to get out and see if you get the opportunity is a mob called EmDee. They produce some amazing music with incredibly fast beats and its done with a didge bass and drums.

The Digeridoo player can only be described as off the planet..........this dude has taken it to unbelieveable levels of brilliance.

If you visit there website there are a few samplers but none are of the quality of stuff on the latest album.

Hope you like.

The Presets went absolutely nuts at Sound Relief!! We watched the set from the comfort of our loungeroom, and by the end we were up jumping around like lunatics =D
(note: a large amount of alcohol may or may not have been involved)

At the moment I am loving:
Tame Impala
The Temper Trap
Miami Horror
Fire! Santa Rosa Fire!
Art vs Science

....to name but a few <3

There is a shitload of other awesome Aussie music at the moment but band names escape me....I shall report back later :)

I'll second Tame Impala (although I've heard them referred to by many a friend as Lame Impala). Art vs Science definitely put on a good show. I've seen them a couple of times now and I like them more and more after every gig. Other bands/ musicians I've been into recently include:

Van She - 80s with a twist. Maybe not enough of a twist for some people, but V was one of my most listened to albums last year.
Jack Ladder- He's got a really great voice and I love his album Love is Gone. I also think he's sexy as sin.
Cut Off Your Hands - They were one of the stand out performances for me at Falls Festival. Crowd were just millling around, middle of the afternoon then bam. So much insane energy mixed with fun mixed with quirk.
Architecture in Helsinki - These guys have been around for ages now, and their sound has changed quite a lot, but I challenge anyone to go to a gig and not dance. It's impossible.
Angus and Julia Stone - Obligatory inclusion. Beautiful, heart-melting music that sneaks up on you.

I'm sure there are a tonne more, but they're the first ones I thought of. I'll probably add to this list a bit later when I go through my CDs.

Ahhhh that is so lame 8) =D
They're awesome, end of story :D

These 2 are definitely obligatory, all spectacular artists and very high on my fave music list <3

Anyone checked out Angus' new album as Lady Of The Sunshine? It's rather more edgy than A&J's album! It's quite fresh :)

Angus' album is not out yet I thought? Start of April the website says... at least that's what they told me. These are my faves....

Angus & Julia Stone - favourites by far... hope they crack the US market.
Van She
The Audreys - latest album not so great
The Waifs - latest album I really like
Faker - their accent puts a lot of people off
Holly Throsby - we are going to make babies one day, she promised me at St Jeromes
Sarah Blasko - stalwart
Kate Miller-Heidke - new album struggled, disappeared from album charts, a few good songs
The Grates
Lior - great voice, lyrics
Bob Evans - great folk/almost-country, new album sounds promising... saw him at the NSC a few months back
Claire Bowditch
British India - deserve a mention

and Lisa Mitchell (lol!)

I am a little sad that because of personal things I didn't get to catch the Presets at all this summer though I had tickets to see them twice (BDO & GV). Oh well

You forgot to mention the part where they are from New Zealand. This band was one of my hit predictions for 2008.

Oh. :( I assumed they were Aussie. Well, since we take everything decent from there and claim it as our own I'm sure we can do the same with those guys. Then when they turn to shit we can give them back.

Angus from Angus and Julia Stone has branched off into another project
Lady of the Sunshine , its definitely a lot louder, and worth checking out.

As far as hardcore goes, Carpathian seem to be making a lot of headway overseas.

Cool band MazDan, breakbeat with didge backing :D

Muph n Plutonic are my all time favorite group at the moment. Their first album and their latest album has provided sooo much listening pleasure for me. I can listen to them over and over. :)

This song (their latest single) is awesome. I have been listening to it a LOT lately :)

Don't worry bout nothin'

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Eddy Current Suppression Ring!

Currently the best rock'n'roll band in australia, if not the world.

^^ Find that hard to believe, breaka but seeing I haven't heard anything from or about them, I will hold off judgement. Do they get played on RRR or PBS? Are they playing any gigs around town?

The Ooga Boogas are also up there amongst the best rock outfits from australia.

Great thread MazDan. I'm a big lover of Australian music too, it's one of the reasons I love Triple J so Goddamn much. :D

The following come to mind - I'll take a look at the list and make sure I haven't doubled up on anyone's suggestions:

  • Cut Copy
  • Pnau
  • Empire of the Sun
  • Faker
  • John Butler Trio
  • Silverchair
  • The Dissociatives
  • Muscles
  • Pez
  • Drapht
  • The Herd
  • Birds of Tokyo
  • Josh Pyke
  • Cog
  • Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
  • British India
  • Bliss n Eso
  • Art vs. Science
  • Little Red
  • Something With Numbers
  • Ash Grunwald
  • The Butterfly Effect
  • The Getaway Plan
  • Children Collide
  • Sparkadia
  • Gyroscope
  • Rise Against
  • Pendulum
  • Dukes of Windsor

Oh and COTB's list reminded me, I HIGHLY recommend The Dirty Secrets live. I saw them when they supported Sparkadia (who sucked balls) and the lead singer was awesome. I fell in love with him a little bit. And as my friend pointed out on my mirror:
