Increasing numbers of teenagers as young as 16 are becoming social smokers of the stimulant drug ice, as they look for alternatives to the party pill ecstasy.

The latest monitoring of ecstasy users by the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre has found that young people are smoking ice with their friends as drug syndicates deliberately seek a younger market.

The Australian National Council on Drugs said yesterday it was concerned the syndicates were shifting their business base away from heroin to the equally addictive ice.

"We underestimate the marketing ability of illicit drug manufacturers. They're targeting younger people. We're seeing this in Asia with young, affluent people," said council chief executive Gino Vumbaca.

The demand has prompted drug syndicates to convert industrial factories overseas to produce the drug in massive quantities. Australian authorities were recently involved in investigating the biggest such operation so far uncovered - a converted shampoo factory capable of producing 60kg of ice a day worth $2.7million.

Australian Federal Police took part in the operation in Malaysia in June and found the 21 people arrested were using a relatively new recipe that enabled them to make the drug from freely available chemicals.

"It's the largest clandestine laboratory that we know of globally," AFP acting national manager of border and international Tim Morris said. "There are links to this seizure to all around the Asia Pacific region. It's reasonable to conclude that some of the product would have found its way into the Australian market."

The bust netted about half a tonne of finished and partly processed ice as well as 80,000 ecstasy tablets. The AFP sent chemists and federal agents to Malaysia after the bust to comb the facility for intelligence and clues to other operations.

Mr Morris said ice was becoming one of the most prevalent drug types the AFP's overseas officers were dealing with.

In Australia the picture was becoming grimmer with the highly-addictive drug becoming attractive to a young, affluent party set who were taking it with friends as an alternative to ecstasy.

Monitoring of users by the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre has found that increasing numbers of young people aged 16 to 25 are smoking ice as a social way of taking the drug.

Senior research fellow Rebecca McKetin said methamphetamine as a drug class was now second only to cannabis in its use among young people in Australia.

"Smoking ice has become popular with young drug users," she said.

"The emergence of ice has been accompanied by a noticeable shift in the demographic.

"It's a pretty young group of drug users. They take ecstasy, smoke pot and they're starting to take ice.

"The thing about smoking ice is it's much more addictive and a lot of young people are naive to the addictive tendency of ice."

The United Nations and the Australian National Council on Drugs will release reports today detailing the spread of the drug across the Asia Pacific and the health risks, particularly HIV and AIDS.

Damn oh well, kinda funny though because I went from ice to ecstasy and didnt look back

6% ? I haven't done any gak in 2 days now, and I hope to be one of those 6%... There's not much out there that tickles my fancy in the absence of a puddle of dope in the bubble with my lips at the business end, however, I would rather watch matlock reruns in a state sponsored mental hospital than suck that glass dick one more time... Good fortune to the children of Australia.

Ice seems to be all over Australian news now-a-days. Poor continent. The war on drugs has yet to be successful so let's see what they can do to prevent this epidemic from flourishing and reaching a peak, or has it already? :/

I thought Ice has been a party drug for a long time.

And ice will NEVER replace ecstasy for the vast majority of weekend partyers. The rush of shardz will never beat E's perfect, feel good, loved up, orgasmic high.

There's a forum for comments as well:

Young Aussies using 'ice'

THE National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre has found the highly-addictive drug ice is becoming attractive to young, affluent Australians who are taking it with friends as an alternative to ecstasy.

After living in inner-city Sydney for the past six months, the ice users I see tend to be in their early 30s to mid 40s. Their minds are so fried that it’s worrying to think what will happen to users who start as early as 16.

In my neighbourhood, it’s not unusual to hear addicts embroiled in very public “ice fights” – high-pitched keening, and the type of swearing that could only be screamed by someone oblivious to their surroundings.

"How could you do this to me you f***** b****?” I’m going to f***** kill you, you stupid c***."

And so forth.

Then there’s the psychosis this drug produces. Returning from the gym on Friday, I watched a man run down the street, screaming after someone who didn’t exist, and a woman standing on the corner, talking to herself and scratching her face which was already covered in sores. (For the effects of ice on the human face, see) this page.

Recent documentaries on the ABC and SBS have discussed the huge increase in global demand for this drug.

Senior research fellow Rebecca McKetin said young people who smoke pot, take ecstasy and are now starting to take ice, are "naive" about the addictive tendency of the drug.

What do you think should be done to try and reduce the uptake of younger people using ice? Do you believe it has the potential to cause more mental health problems than other drugs? Do you think suppliers or users should be targeted by police?

I dont know who is worst, a human who is a serial killer or a drug dealer. To me there is no difference. They are both destroying or killing lives. The police do the best they can do. Ice is freely available, go to kings cross.
What can help the drug issue? A message to all addicts: “stop taking it and to those who are considering taking it, DONT! If you dont take it then there isnt a market for it and things such as ICE wont exsist”. SIMPLE!

The forum posts are actually quite balanced, especially for a more typically conservative paper like News Limited.

Get real, addictive personalities can get hooked on anything even coffee, alcohol is still the worst around but its all a matter of control. Even ice is not a problem in MODERATION 2 or 3 times a year is no problem. Take responsibilty for yourself and have some control whingers, stop blaming drugs and society for your failings.

Drug dealers arent to blame here...they are no forcing any one to use the drug...if some one has n addiction it is there fault…
people who say on get the dealer maybe u should get the addicts some help into rehab or soe form of isolation then target the dealer…
the dealer is only in business coz of the addict...once u have the addics then target the dealers as they will be wanting more business so they will be out and about
the dealer isnt to blame
fix the addict then the dealer

People ask where this drug came from and say the people who created it should be crucified - this synthetic conconction and recipe was invented to keep troops alive in war. The first war it was used in was WWII. Basically, if they stayed awake for days and were seemingly super-human there was more chance we would win the war.

So ironically the goverment supported the invention of this and is now fighting a war against it!

anyone see all the news reports tonight?

Surprisingly 7 & 10's stories were fairly open minded (as far as mass media goes...) 9's was dissappointing.

The demonization of ice has been going on and this is no different. Its just to scare parents by saying kids are getting sick of the already dangerous ecstasy and now turning to the one thats worse than heroin...

Lol. A "human" who is a drug dealer is as bad as a serial killer?? Thats bullshit. The dealer is probably just trying to make money to get by. The user/addict is the one who makes the desicion to buy the drugs then seeks out the dealer. The serial killer doesnt give the victim a choice. Thats not even taking into account the fact that taking drugs is a little more fun than being killed.

Coming into this debate as an manager of a department in one of America's big tobacco firms, I can firmly say that your street level drug dealer is not a bad, horrible person... I'm the bad person, helping an industry kill millions every year.

I would classify organized crime, may it be Russians, Chinese, non-ethnic gangs etc... They are who I would classify as criminals, because the profits of drug sales go towards other endevors, which in turn, sponsor other illegal activities (prostitution, arms, above board investments etc..)

But getting back to ice.. the issue isn't the drug itself, but it's availability.. Weed is so widespread, because it is so available.. just like popular clothing brands, drinks etc... you put something on the market that is available at a beccon call, gives the user a good response.. and you're going to create popularity.. This is why ICE is effecting Australia's young at such an alarming rate..

They're not turning their backs on E, H.. whatever.. it's just, as they suggest, more available..

It's funny.. I for the life of me do not want 16 year olds using any fucking drugs, because I know a very small percentile of them would be able to use responsibly, as we support on these boards..
