Ask Psychiatrist about Namenda?

Hello all,

I was just wondering if it would be wise to ask my Dr. about Namenda and the posibility of going on it to prolong my experience with my Vyvanse. I take 70mg daily, and that is his maximum allowed. I am cornered as the tolerance continues to steadily rise, with less pronounces effects, and shorter durations. I estimate at this point, I would have to be on over 100mg to see favorable results. Since my Dr. will in no way budge on this issue I imagine, should I become my own advocate and make a case for why Namenda would be beneficial to me and continuing down my path as a college student. Or should I take the simpler approach and ask for Strattera or Wellbutrin? We talked about it a bit last time, and he said that Strattera would increase Norepinephrine levels even higher,(yay!),and that would put me at risk of seizing. My response was,"Well I'm on gabapentin, and that prevents or reduces seizures." Needless to say, I caught him off guard, and he is a very intelligent man, but anyways he laughed and said that I was right and that had slipped his mind. Anyways, what do you guys/girls think? %)

The Support forum is for technical support.

As for your question, the only clinical use I see for Namenda is it's use in treatment for Alzheimer's disease.

Well it is like THE NMDA receptor antagonist, which means my tolerance to my ADD medication wouldn't rise, and I'd be set. Don't believe the drug companies on everything they say their products are for. For instance, my Gabapentin(600mg,low dosage) is being prescribed and used off label for anxiety, and guess what? It works like a charm; think benzo without the inhibition and sleepiness, which is great coupled with my amphetamine, as well as abuse history...

Could you please move this thread to the appropriate place then Tommyboy? I'd appreciate it. :D

I have been prescribed gabapentin off label as well. I am well aware of the practice of medications being prescribed off label, I just never heard of Namenda being used like this.

I will try this over in BDD, but I am not sure if it will stay open. It is really something that you should discuss with your doctor.

Well the reason I am asking here, and that I hope it doesn't close, is that I want to hear about those who have discussed it with their docs.

The idea isn't originating from my head, so you'd be surprised. Namenda also shows very promising results in treating other conditions, besides dementia.

If others have done it, and have reported positive results, then ask your doctor about it. There is only one way that you will find out if it works for you.
