Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is an immune-mediated disorder caused by dietary gluten in genetically susceptible people (HLA-DQ2 or HLA-DQ8). It causes small intestine inflammation, villous atrophy, and nutritional malabsorption.

Diagnosis:

- Blood Testing: Initial screening relies on tissue transglutaminase IgA (tTG-IgA) and total IgA levels (to rule out IgA deficiency). High tTG-IgA titers (more than 10 times the upper limit of normal) or specific child-focused guidelines can sometimes support diagnosis without a biopsy, though a duodenal biopsy remains the diagnostic standard for most adults.
