art

touche.
But the thing that really makes art 'art' is in fact the subtleness of the message. Unlike newspaper editorials or nike commercials, true art is simply a symbol or series of symbols with subtle meaning. Otherwise you just have a message, not an artistic message.

neat picture.
now I'm not so sure we're going to agree on this, but I truly think that would fit nicely with my definition. Its not just photograph of a woman, its an artistic painting because it is using the idea of a woman to convey subtle concepts by drawing her in a particular artsy way. Argh that didn't come out to well, but basically he manipulated an 'idea' with subtle distortions that convey emotions and messages.
make any sense?

never been to melbourne, closest I've come was spending time in Double Bay, Sydney, which I very much enjoyed.
I admire your last deconstruction, I found it was a little too poignant to rebut in a thread thats not really about making a point, but rather just expressing a sentiment.
new definition of art: that which escapes definition :)

Ok, maybe this sounds a little too much like a cliche, but damn it, it's so true: Art, like beauty, is entirely dependant on the perspective from which the audience views it - is it not?
For example (and in keeping with the picasso theme,) "Geurnica" was a highly controversial piece that discussed the butality and ugliness of war, yet Picasso chose to use only black and white to convey his idea. Some might say that this colour choice was dramatic due to the ability to present conflicting dualities (the positive of "fighting for a noble cause" v's the negative "ugliness" of war,) yet some would say that this is complete and utter shite.
But that's just my 0.02, feel free to disagree. :)
Been to both Melbourne and Toronto (used to live in Montreal, currently residing in Sydney.) Both really nice places.
BTW cosmicpoo, interesting name... ;)
