Aromatherapy (and the 4 Thieves)

Aromatherapy has always interested me……
I love it and use it regularly.

Aromatherapy means “to treat by scents”.

“Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to aid in the balancing of the body, mind, and spirit.”
source

Essential Oils can be used in massage, baths, inhalation and ingested (though ingesting an essential oil is considered herbal medicine and not aromatherapy).

Aromatherapy has been around for thousands of years-
Many credit the Egyptians for the discovery of aromatherapy-
Nearly 6000 years ago they used it for healing emotions, embalming, cosmetics and medicinal purposes.
Most well known was the Egyptians use of essential oils in embalming-
It is said that myrrh, cloves and nutmeg were part of this process.
They are also credited with the invention of the distillation machine.
There is evidence of aromatherapy being used in Ancient Greece, India, China, and Rome.
Texts found in Babylon (1700 BC) suggests the use of Myrrh and Cedar in many medicinal recipes.

There are stories from all around the world of the use of essential oils in healing the body, mind and spirit.
My favorite story is that of the Four Thieves .
During the Bubonic Plague there were four men, all worked at a perfumery-
They were bold in their robbing of people sick from the plague.
They would enter the homes, take what they wanted, and never got sick.
Eventually they were caught and told if they told their secret of how they never fell ill they would be released.
They told that they had made long cones (think a large beak) that they filled with certain herbs and essential oils that they wore into the homes. The inhalation of these oils kept them well.
They were then hung after sharing their recipe.
Now there have been scientific studies of these herbs and many many more that prove that they have antiseptic, antibacterial properties.
You can use a combination of these oils or singularly to make cleaning products.
Essential Oils can be found in Organic Cleaning Products sold in stores.
You can even sometimes find “the Four Thieves Blend” sold in stores.(though if you compare, they are different from each other;))

I use oils in making lotions, soaps, cleaning products, body sprays, massage oils (some oils are great for soothing sore muscles) , facial steams and blends for the oil burner or diffuser to scent the room..
There are so many options ……
There are single oils and blends to clear allergies, relieve stress, get you energized, clear your mind, and open your heart…….

I hope we will continue to learn from aromatherapy’s history and continue to include it in our lives as a healing tool in the future.

I cant live without my favorite scents. I cant stand "fragrance free" toiletries and stuff, everything has to smell good. I cant even go to bed without my favorite bedtime cologne, and my room smelling a certain way. I dont wear makeup or style my hair or wear fashionable clothes, but I need to smell good every single day . When I dont wear my favorite scent (for the day) I feel naked, and I cant even concentrate on my work! I'd absolutely die if my sense of smell disappeared! Hahaha (taurus for ya) ;)

Right now I use this vanilla and blood orange oil together in my room (oil diffuser)...its so relaxing and just absolutely lovely.

Oh- this is hard to answer:)
My FAVORITE is hands down- Rose and Myrrh. I love it- I made a body spray and body lotion with it for days I want to pamper myself (Rose Absolute is expensive- Myrrh too but a little goes a long way:)) I also like Orange, Clove and a drop of Patchouli (the only time I can use Patchouli b/c I'm not too thrilled with it on its own.....It is also good with Ylang Ylang)
I like Lavender and Vanilla- Chamomile and Lavender-Frankincense and Myrrh-Rosemary and Mint.......Depends on my mood.
Most of the time I like flowery smells.Rose is my favorite but I like violet smells or lilac (which I don't think I have ever seen as an essential oil but an essence or a fragrence oil) and I like Jasmine.......
I like Neroli, which to me is very uplifting though it is often used in a nightime blend for sleep.
My husband makes an Awesome blend of Essential Oils and Fragrance Oils he calls Amber Ashes-Its divine.

hahaha I just re read this and I just listed alot of oils.
Its like trying to name my favorite song- I have a hard time leaving songs out:)
(All of my planets- and my ASC- minus 3- are in Air Signs-
( 2 stelliums in air)Libra being one of them- very indecisive:))

I love so many different scents -- you could say I love fruity/gourmand scents and I like to temper headier scents with lighter ones. I mix and match so many (especially when I layer - soap, lotion, cologne, etc. ) and for my room. I love vanilla-satsuma/orange, lemon basil, lemon-orange-ginger, cassis, pomegranate, neroli, tangerine, haha you get the picture. I have tons of spanish baby cologne that I layer with more expensive eau de toilettes that smell uniquely me (get complimented a lot when I do that!)
I am not much a floral person (hehe) but I do like frangipani, cherry blossom, gardenia.

Im not a purist when it comes to essential oils, I love buying pre-blended oils from just about anywhere. My two most favorite ones ATM (from the Body Shop) are Red Poppies and Passionfruit ---- so you get an idea of just what combination of scents I like. Ack, Im also the type of person who cant leave something out when asked to pick a favorite -- I make such long lists all the time :)

I just bought some of Dr. Bronner's bottled crazy person soap in the almond scent, and man is it awesome. I'm not too crazy about scents in general, but I think that it is because they affect me a lot. I should look a bit more into it.

^I have wanted to try Dr. Bronner's soaps- the unscented- to use as a base for my own scents but I have read Glycerin dries out your skin......? Let me know how you like it Dave.......

Yes- I remember now you like Citrusy smells MC :)
I may have to go check out the Red Poppies stuff- The description (under Notes) sounds good......I love Bergamot, Amber,Jasmine,Blackberry and Cedarwood :) All listed there:)
Yum!

I don't mind it, but since I have pretty hard water it doesn't lather much. From what I've heard it really does work best with a washcloth and minimal water, as the label says (in-between the pseudo-jewish-pan/monotheist word salad), but I have yet to try it. I probably wouldn't use it on my face though, but I don't often use much on my face since my shaving soap dries it out a lot if I'm not careful.

Speaking of which, I use a sandalwood shaving soap that is pretty nifty.
