Are you a successful drug user?

I think I'm a pretty successful drug user. I go to college, get good grades, don't procrastinate more than the average student, etc. The only problem I have is keeping money. I can't seem to have a positive influx of money into my bank account, I'm constantly spending it on drugs

You might want to keep an eye on that. I think drug usage is fine, as long as it doesn't negatively affect everything else in your life. If you're finding that you regularly have no money as it's being spent on drugs that's a little indicative of a slight problem ...

It has def affected me negatively. A bad criminal record, probation, fines, dead friends, overdoses. Some drugs are really hard to use with no consequences. Yet that H calls me back every time. Addiction is a motherfucker, a paradox so strong it boggles my mind.

^Five years. With a few periods of forced sobriety not lasting more than 3 months (it's a cycle :))

On meth, I manage to work full-time (7 days a week 40+ hours), go to school part-time, and be financially independent.

Off meth? I'm lying around the house depressed, not wanting to go to work or school or see my friends, and thinking about how much I hate my life and my physical appearance. Thank you methamphetamine, while you are simultaneously destroying me (and will eventually) you do make me a much more successful person in the meantime.

Jesus. Does it even make you euphoric anymore? Or just "normal"?

I never found meth that euphoric. Kinda just waked me up and makes me chatty ... which is not so different from how i normally am ... and then I crave it hard after another 30min or so. Done it maybe 20 times over 6 years and decided it's not really my thing. Far happier to stick with ecstasy.

Everybody here who claims drugs have destroyed their lives are a bit sad to me. Way to take the easy way out and cast blame on something other then yourselves. I guess this wouldn't be America without people casting out personal responsibility, huh?

Me? I ditched college BEFORE my drug use. It depressed me. I hated it. I am currently living with my boyfriend (who works as a graphic designer and makes between 60-75 K a year. He also uses drugs.) I am working minimum wage and interning at a record label, which I hope to one day join the staff of; or use my experience to get a job at another label. I have a great relationship with my family, amazing friends, and an ass kicking boyfriend.

All and all, I am happy, healthy, and financially stable. If I had an RV and health insurance; life would be perfect.

Or, maybe you need to live in a country where the health insurance is free/included in your tax?

I have had the same job for over two years; I have very good grades and high test scores. I maintain my car, appearance, social life (somewhat -_-), and use frequently.

Eh, I smoked about a quarter of weed a day with a good friend of mine through 11th & 12th grade. It always has made me concentrate, but he would just sit there and stare. I ended up with around a 3.8 GPA, going into Uni of WA next year.

^^ anybody can be a successful pot smoker; just look at everyones parents that are doin ight. whether they still smoke or not they all (majority) used to or have tried it; and they turned out ight. my pops blazed till we were old enuff to realize it. smoked for 40 yrs or so and still was a main provider for me and my 4 siblings and mother.

I went to college before I started drugs, but drank pretty heavily on the weekends in downtown Athens, GA. I made all A's and one B in my political science classes (my major), did pretty well (never below a C and mostly B's) on core curriculum. I graduated, became a staff writer for the local newspaper and was fairly successful. My downfall in that job was indirectly drug related because I was heavy into opiates the entire time I was employed by them. Since then, I haven't had much success, but I'm getting better since I'm on Suboxone Maintenance. I've cleaned up, have two jobs and never once late or called in sick. I'm gettin' better man.

Went to university, got decent grades, got a professional job in the public sector.

Education-wise I completed a doctoral degree in chemistry and have made and tried nearly every recreational drug at least once. Career-wise I work in the pharmaceutical industry developing new therapeutics and family-wise I am blessed with a great wife and 2-month old baby. This may be an obvious statement but if used respectfully, recreational drugs can be an enriching part of ones life but if used disrepectfully they can also destroy it. I've always strived for moderation and being honest with myself.

I've never burnt my self with a hot impliment. I have never been sold a bunk pill. I don't pay top dollar and if I want something I don't have to call too many people to source it. Never had a bad trip I couldn't laugh about half an hour later. I have never been in a car accident or had my lights punched out while inebriated. I have never been short of money that required me to break into a home to feed a habit. I have never overdosed or had a comedown that lasted more than late into the next afternoon.

All told I guess I am a successfull drug user. I have also been a qualified dentist for over 12 years, have two beautiful kids who love me unconditionally and am in love with a fantastic women as well as having many friends who also share my love for life. I consider myself to be a successful member of society as well %)

I'm a daily drug user myself and attend raves every weekend, managed to have a job part time, and attend college part time. I guess one can consider "successful." Only thing lacking would be my own place, but rents so expensive, its difficult to afford. By contrast when I compare other drug users, such as ones I see at raves, or another scene that uses hard drugs, I'm considered more "successful." Compare me to a non-drug user, maybe not as successful as them.

Functioning Addict

I made this thread because I'm a a functioning addict (meth, tv, movies etc.) and wanted to reach out to other fuctioning users/addicts.

I'll tell you, I've been been on a 5-6 month run and am still going about my business paying the bills, working the job, no lawbreaking, no violent behavior, no stealing, very little drama, no careless sex, I eat and sleep regularly like a normal person (even eating healthy), have good hygiene, am tidy, have friends and close family members (nonusers), I'm polite, and yet here I am!

I got a daily beer habit though (like 24/7....helps flush the system out and prevents ODing), but on other recreational habits I spend 120/wk which lasts about 5 days instead of 7 now. Now I know some of you spend that on a day's fun which I have no idea HOW, but what I do is more than some could handle.

Being a functioning addict makes it that much harder to stop. I don't really want to! but the body don't care. When it's had enough then it's had enough. I did the 12 step thing 10 yrs ago (5 yrs) before any of you AA/NA zealots start lecturing me. I know they work so go ahead and find the exit please, and don't let the door hit you in the ass..k? :)

This is a forum for functioning users/addicts but ALL are welcomed. Preferrably stay on topic though, follow BL rules of conduct & etiquette, and what your experience is on being a functioning user or addict. Thank you.:)

I can do it for awhile usually I go on a run everythings good first month or two then the spiral begins and I hit hard at the end. Its the long term you need to look out for tolerance will eventually become a huge factor then youll start depleting your funds then the stealing and shadyness happens. No one steals when they have money in the bank and drugs in thier pocket.
