The more i think about it the more i think so.

i guess the answer mgiht also be yes but so what?

id been taking a break from drugs. first i said never agian, then i said wait till i get x, y, z and see. well x, y, z, doesnt come so easy and im getting stressed but unlike before where id just cave ive held out past my cravings and feel alot better for it just cos now i know i can do it and even if i do dabble again sometime ill know that ive been able to hold off before when i want to.

Anyhow im wondering if theres any real justification for taking them at the moment cos currently im feeling like i want to be at peak efficiency at all times.

once im old i thought is a better time to indulge in drugs if the body could still handle it because youve already lived life and dont have anything to lose since your about to kick the bucket anyway- like the grandpa on little miss sunshine. might not work out that way tho if your old as comedown might be hugely multiplied i dunno.

i know the other side ppl will say you are young and healthy so you should live life to its fullest and take drugs being a part of it. im now starting to think drugs are just a distraction that get in the way and complicate life, which is granted harder to enjoy sober, but its like some sculpture which takes a long time to craft and if you lean on a drug then it means you arent sculpting your life so things atrophy whereas the more you dive into life then the more you get back- in theory :P. Ive also found i get whittled down to a nub with stress when i am in the ratrace and dont get any posittive feedback for long periods- ie the norm in this bleak recession era so i find it a constant test of willpower.

maybe it doesnt have to be so black and white but i always think about what is the 'logical conclusion' of something so usually do think whats the point if it isnt economically viable over the longterm.

Yeah drugs can be a distraction from real life. But does it have to be a bad thing? From the way you're wording your post, it's like it is a bad thing. It's a bad thing when you're taking drugs 24/7 so you don't have to experience real life.
But if you have a job, friends, family, etc. and you use drugs on the weekends as an "escape" from your work or from all your other commitments, just for a day or for a weekend, is that a bad thing? It's about control. I think you need to control your usage.

They're a tool.

One you can use to escape from reality with, or one you can use in conjunction and moderation to expand upon perception, while keeping your head as to where you are in relation to the begenning of your exploration into altered states territory.

Many get lost along the way unfortunately.

short, and most precise, answer is a resounding 'NO'! [the word 'just' is what throws your question off ;P ]
That said, sure they can and are frequently used as such. BUT, to discount things like marijuana for medicinal reasons, amphetamines for a variety of reasons, mdma sessions for ptsd (looking at you, MAPS), or just plain enjoyment/relaxation (alcohol/nicotine being the currently accepted chems in this regard), is to try and shoehorn the gamut of "intoxication" into a cubbyhole that only a straightedger could see as valid.

They are the sword of saints and the honey of the wicked.

(They can be a tool, but they can be rationalized as that to be used as a distraction from reality.)

^ indeed.

if you are having doubts then you are probably doing to much/many. take heed of your thoughts and listen to your body.
