Isn't it just like paying for a brand name in clothes ie irrational?

I understand up to a point that you feel confident buying from a trusted brand but don't all prescription drugs have to pass tests and contain the exact same product?

I read some fda thing or something about how the generics have to be certified to have exact same purity and contents of the name brands however does this still apply for european companies.

For example baclofen has tons of different name brands. I found also that even the same name brand - lioresal which seems standard in the US- has a spanish counterpart and their baclofen is a third of the price even though the name lioresal is used. When looking at the pharmacy of manufacture it said it was made the spanish branch of novartis rather then the main one.

Also there is another brand miorel which is made by the greek pharma company kleva. I looked online though and it didn't have any hits almost in google. So that wasn't too inspiring. Also with the greek financial crash I wonder if they might also have lower standards with their pharma industry - like where theres' smoke there's fire. If the economic system fucked up who knows what else they cut corners with.

The generics can be less than a third of the price of the well known brands so this is no trifling matter. But does that lesser price come at a risk to your health is what I'm trying to find out. I can understand that in western countries they still have to keep a high standard but what about these 'developing' countries where the generics happen to be from one of them?

The EU has drug labeling laws that are just as strong if not better than the US FDA. So you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

It's not like making generic medications is rocket science. Even a pharma company with second-hand pill pressing equipment should still have enough accuracy to reliably make generics, and portioons fo different batches are still subject to occasional tests for sterility and product content. You really only have to worry about grey-market generics from China or India, IMO.

I'm not exactly sure about the Eu's drug standards, but the fda requires all manufacturers to have a less than 10% active ingredient variance. So a 30mg morphine HCl could be anywhere from 27mg-33mg.. I would imagine some of the generics being on the lower side, but that amount is negligible..

Aside from what's already been said, aren't the inactive ingredients the only things that can really vary between brand name vs generic drugs? I get what I can get, it's often generic, and from my personal experience, it's all the same.

I don't really think the generic manufacturers cut corners so much as big brand names love to price-gouge.

Only thing to consider is that differing inactive ingredients can cause different absorption rates in individuals. Uncommon but something to keep in mind.

I can't speak for EU generics, but I know here in the US certain manufacturers abuse the 10% variance to the maximum.

It's the reason why virtually everyone hates the pink Corepharma adderall, for example. They have a greater amount of levo-amp and that shit sucks.

So far the main difference between original and generic I've noticed (I'm in Europe) is that the name brand pills often have some sort of coating. Like actual Topamax is tasteless unless you keep it in your mouth for a while before swallowing, whereas generic topiramate immediately produces a slight horseradish-like taste (presumably from the topiramate itself, as it shares structural similarities with the natural flavor compounds called "glucosinolates").
Also, the boxes are often different sizes (dimensions-wise, so the same amount of name brand pills will come in a bigger box with more empty space in it); I guess that only matters outside of North America though, since over here we get our prescription meds in the original packaging.

Oh, and lastly, the coloration is different, although often similar enough for pills containing the same dosage, ex.:
* Pfizer Lyrica, 300mg: Off-white/ "ketchup"-Red
* Krka Pregabalin, 300mg: White/"congealed blood"-Red
* Ratiopharm Pregabalin, 300mg: "pus"-cream yellow / "spoiled liver"-Red :p

So long as by genetic you dont mean some old guy on pornhub.com holding a clip board in a lab coat smilling saying viagra cialis no prescription needed! Discrete shipping 100% Legit not a scam. These are fake however real generics from pharmacies are the same as brand name unlike shirts generics have to be exactly that drug.

Genetic?
Generic?
Geriatric?

I think you're getting a few words mixed up, mate ;)

You obvious never worked in retail pharmacy.

Patient "Give me my genetic metamorphin. You know, the white pill."

Me Fills metformin. Dies a little more.

Lmao hey atleast i didnt ask if there is a gmo free metformin without the toxic chemicals used in synthesis i could use because i dont like taking drugs *sips starbucks*

I agree with Sekio on this one. I only want to add that generic formulations are occasionally withdrawn for differences in drug release or absorption. Proper release is just as important as the active ingredients, but this is usually tested

I couldnt care a shit about a little variance in purity it is putting lethal cost cutting fillers or otherwise the wrong drug I would be concerned of. I dont mean in general but I watched a doc once about chinese counterfeting and it said even some counterfeits managed to make it into official pharmacies befire they found out and the bad thing in it gave you cancer. seomthing like that anyhow

I only heard of counterfits like that on online pharmacies which from what I understand are just scams .b

Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites (VIPPS) seem fairly solid, however I only use them for meds that head to the medicine cabinet for a slow death. Anything schedule 4 or better and I start stalking the mailman.

Generic meds can feel very different has already mentioned. The binders do affect the speed of absorption.

I have found this with Lorazepam some brands are far better than others and they are all from a pharmacy with a prescription.

I Bought some 2 milligram xanax through the mail from India. They came in A Blister Pack and the tablets were round. They were the real deal but some pills felt like 3-6 milligrams?
