Is there a way to tell what type or grade it is (like low, medium or high) just by looking/smelling it?

Usually higher grade bud will have a stronger smell than lower grade, so if you can smell it without holding the bag up to your nose then it is most likely really good stuff. Also, higher grades tend to be greener or whiter (as opposed to brown) and have a shiny quality to them (from the trichomes).

best way to find out if weed is really good is to submerge it in water for 24 hours and smell it after that.

How colorful it is, how prominent are the hairs/crystals (the more the better). Also make sure the bud is not too leafy

the smell should be extremely potent, when u have a bag of grade a and u stick your nose in it your in heaven

The Ultimate Cannabis Grading Scale shall consist of two ratings: a letter rating from A to F and a number rating from 1 to 6. The letter rating is used to describe the objective physical characteristics of the cannbis to be rated, while the number is a subjective rating of its effects.
Please use the following scale as a guideline when determining the letter rating:
A - green, lots of trichomes. no seeds, excellent taste/smell/burn. This is connoisseur type stuff.
B - green with very few seeds, if any. ok taste/smell. decent amount of trichomes
C - dark green buds with very few seeds (if any) and small stems. tastes/smells bad and is all dried out.. possibly few trichomes
D - dark green seedy stemmy buds.
E - green/brown seedy stemmy nasty buds
F - dirt brown seedy stemmy nasty powder
The number rating is a scale from one to six, with one being the best and 6 being the worst. Only really good cannabis should get a number score of 1, and only really poor cannabis should get a 6.
Cannabis with a rating of A1 is excellent cannabis, while F6 is really bad cannabis.
Please try to use this scale when referring to the quality of pot in Cannabis Discussion to avoid the confusion common with slang terms.

Dank: Strong smell, possibly special e.g. fruity or especially pungent / colorful, well-manicured, seedless fluffy bud with darker or vibrant orange / red pistils (hairs) & lots of VISIBLE TRICHROMES!!! Often lighter green indicates dank, but not always; don't be fooled into buying a lower grade bud pumped with nutes. Sativas especially can be dark looking bud but still incredibly heady. Well, this bud can also be very dense, but don't get it confused with...
Beasters: Dense-ass bud, basically high mids. Called KB / mersh in some places, it's decent but nothing special. Mass-produced stuff that often isn't flushed right / contains hermies. Seems to often be indica, whereas there's a nice variety of sativa, indica, and blends in the dank category.
*On the subject of flushing nutrients, another sign of good bud is if the bud tastes smooth and the ash turns white rather than black or dark grey. This means the bud was flushed / cured correctly*
Mids: Decent stuff. "High mids" are unseeded; mids / low mids usually have seed. A lot of this stuff is grown outdoors or could have been better but was mistreated, poorly cured, etc. Often "older" bud. Usually a bit stemmy. When buying, look for a good manicure, trichromes, & a skunky smell.
Schwag / Bammer: Seedy, brown, bricked-up shit. Don't buy it. There is no high, you'll just give yourself a headache. If you see something and immediately think "wow, that looks shitty" it's probably some schwag. Don't fuck with weed that ain't green! Avoid stuff that smells like hay...
Know these four categories. Use them.

usually high grade will have a lot of crystals best way to put it is that it looks like someone rolled it around in sugar. and it will be fluffy kinda like a little pillow. no seeds. just straight buds. smells like straight asshole with different scents lol.but its true.
mids usually are still in buds/nugs, usually color ranges from dark green to light green. very few seeds if none, red hairs very noticeable, smells pretty decent not as strong as high grade
low-usually brown, not many red hairs, shit ton of seeds, not very smelly, kinda smells like hay,
