I have read both PIHKAL and TIHKAL and although I am not a chemist by any means, I really like those books.

Is the Shulgin Index roughly the same ?
From what I can gather, it seems overly technical. Is there something interesting in there for those of us who are not studied chemists/scientists ?

Thanks anyway !

It's pure pharmacology and chemistry, not a "fun" book in any way. There is a TON of information in it though, def. worth it if you know your chemistry

I was pleasantly surprised when I saw how much non-chemistry content is in PIHKAL/TIHKAL. At least a couple hundred pages of Shulgin talking. Haven't seen any of that on the internet either.

So nothing new like that?

There's very little subjective commentary, if any, of human consumption of the compounds discussed in The Shulgin Index. I do not have my copy on hand at the moment and have not looked over it for some months, so I can't provide too much detail. However there are hundreds if not thousands of compounds covered in the book, some with as much detail as seen in PIHKAL/TIHKAL, and some with only a name or structure. If you'd like to explore the vastness of the man's research, as well as support him directly, I'd encourage buying the book.
Check this thread out as well: http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/threads/569630-Ann-and-Sasha-Shulgin-Need-Our-Help
I'll also suggest checking out the movie made surrounding Shulgin, Dirty Pictures.

Nope, it is a reference book - virtually all of it, but with some juicy extra info here and there. I bought it and indeed refer to and revere it. But it's not a book to read for fun like the first parts of the xIHKALs.

It must be a big disappointment to those of us the technical stuff is wasted on.

Question seems answered, here is another thread on it if you wish to discuss other aspects of the book:

And we also have the psychedelic books thread:
