Anyone Think Michael Phelps or Society Would Be Better Off if He Was Arrested for Pot?

American swimmer Michael Phelps just became the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time. We know that Phelps at least once, and probably more than once, used marijuana. I think it would be hard for anyone to argue that his use of the plant did any real damage to Phelps as a human being.

Clearly having smoked pot didn’t prevent Phelps from becoming the greatest Olympic winner of all time. In the same way, the actual use of marijuana didn’t stop Bill Clinton or Barack Obama from graduating from top universities and eventually becoming President.

This leads to the question: Does anyone honestly think Phelps or society would be better off if he had been arrested on marijuana charges and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law?

Does anyone thing Phelps personally or the United States as a whole would be doing better if he had a criminal record, paid large fines, was put on prohibition and/or even served some jail time for using marijuana? Depending on where it happened and the circumstance surround it, all these things could have theoretically happened to an individual for using marijuana based on current laws.

The question is not a joke or just asked rhetorically. I’m being completely sincere. It is important for voters to answer seriously, because it is at the heart of a very serious policy debate about marijuana laws in this country. Every year millions of Americans use marijuana, and over 800,000 will be prosecuted for marijuana violations.

The supposed justification for having a marijuana prohibition is to protect people from the “damage” caused by marijuana use, but if you admit that the prohibition itself causes far more harm to individuals and society than the actual consumption the plant ever could, that means there is something seriously wrong with our laws.

Uh...No?

Someone posted a picture of the dude hitting a bong - are there even any applicable grounds for arrest for something like that?

Yeah he was never arrested. I hope that he advocates for legalation for weed.

Yeah smoking pot must really harm your lungs pretty bad, especially if the worlds best swimmer can hit the bong and still kick some serious ass in the pool... Sarcasm. Good on him.

His sponsors uptight reactions to the picture cost him wayyy more than simply smoking ever would.

So he lost some money from the sponsors back then, has it ruined his career? Nope.

Just because his career didn't end doesn't mean he didn't suffer a number of consequences. At the time I remember there being a chance he wouldn't be allowed to swim at the World Championships or some other competitions.

I'm also pretty sure he lost more than just "some" money. Athletes in sports like track and swimming rely heavily on sponsors and endorsements. His swimming career is coming to an end now. The previous years and current time is the time for him to make the most money from swimming.

Many famous athletes and actors, role models in todays society, thanks to these people the general public atleast accept the fact that addiction is a disease.

hes still endorsed by subway i think lol. funny that a pot smoking olympian would be shilling for a cheap sandwich chain. good for him tho.

Yes he should be locked up. Possession of marijuana is a crime and if he committed it yes by it's definition and legal status he should be. Would society be better off? No they would need to either kill him to not drain money or put him to use in slave labor.

That way law is up held and society benifits.

I Remeber reading in this same forum that article of him smoking the bong, then he turns round and does this. What a guy!
