Could you recommend what would be the best way to come of Seroquil? How long would you want to taper down for.
I've found, and there is a general consensus that it is a very sedating drug, especially at the larger doses prescribed for mental health issues. Makes sense seeing that 25mg tablets are prescribed as an off label sleep aid, and some people are prescribed the 200mg tablets for their mental heath problems.
**Short Answer**
For 25mg even with daily use for months, I'd say up to 18 months, a simple on and off taper would be effective, you will just need to anticipate rebound symptoms of whatever you were taking it for.
**Non Abuse and no underlying mental health disorder**
If taking it for sleep, expect rebound insomnia and agitation, a general feeling of uneasiness for a few days. Those symptoms should subside after 7 - 10 days with no major disruptions to your daily life. Some things that can make things easier would be Melatonin 3mg, 450mg Valerian root capsules (stay away from the 'Combo' bottle, try to find just Valerian root), I always recommend a Amino 2222 supplement (it provides all Essential and Non Essential Amino acids which will help with the daytime symptoms). But just simply taking 25mg seroquel every other day for 5 days then a last 25mg at the 7th day is enough to skip most WD symptoms.
If you take seroquel nightly at 75 - 100 mg then I would do a taper back to the lowest dose available, cut down to 50 right away. Supplement with Omega - 3, you can use Valerian Root to assist with the rebound insomnia. I would not recommend using 5-HTP, any dopamine mimicking or any hypnotic drugs (outside of a standard dose of Ambien if you just have to). I prefer Rozerem and a small Melatonin (3mg max) supplement to help restore a natural sleep cycle. A good Amino Acid supplement like Amino 2222 will help with the daytime WD effects of seroquel, it provides all essential and non essential Amino Acids. Taper down from 100 to 50 right away, then follow a standard dosage reduction schedule to bring you from 50 to 0 over 7 days, while taking the above recommended supplements.
**Non Abuse, with underlying Mental Health Disorder**
If your on 200 - 300 mg of seroquel as needed for a legitimate mental health disorder then you will need to do some preloading to prepare for the change in brain chemistry as you withdraw from seroquel. Use the 75 - 100 mg plan, just preload Amino acids 1 week prior to your taper date and extend the taper to a 2 week timeframe. Using Rozerem and Melatonin is very effective once you taper down below 100 mg (most notably when you get down to 50 mg) as you should be experiencing rebound insomnia and possible acute depression/anxiety issues. This is where Omega - 3 and Amino 2222 really shine, Valerian Root taken during the day will help with the agitation caused by your rebound anxiety. If Depression is your rebound symptom then Vitamin B Complex, especially B12 sublingal or Liquid form can help give you a natural 'up' feeling, also spending atleast 20 - 30 min outside in direct sunlight can help. At this point your trying to alleviate the discomfort caused by your brain chemistry changing. Seroquel is very efficient at binding to the D(1,2,3,4) up to 90% efficiency I believe receptors and allowing your body to readjust naturally over a 2 - 3 week period is one of the most beneficial methods of 'detox' in the long run.
Just remember, neither Opiates or Benzos are helpful with tapering off seroquel, you will just end up causing cross addiction and the 'helping' effect you are recieving is just a 'brain placebo' especially opiates. This will only help mimic the dopamine surges seroquel is known to produce (one of it's mechanisms of action). Benzo's are not a good idea either as seroquel is already classified as a major tranqualizer and if you are tapering from a high dose (200-250mg+) you risk significant CNS depression.
But on the flip side, if you are trying to WD from Opiates and do not take serquel there are studies out there that suggest it
MAY be effective at minimizing WD effects.
And yes, this was the **Short Version** I had to rewrite my post twice because the first 2 were LONG, that and I just drank some 12g Kratom tea I had leftover from the other night and I was going into MUCH more detail than I already have.
Hope this helps anyone out there looking to get off seroquel. I quit CT at around 400mg daily, but not before themilitary made me 'taper' from 400 to 25 over a 3 day weekend, not fun, but I survived.
One last note, if you are taking Seroquel for a mental health disorder and need to be on an Atypical Anti-Psychotic Zyprexa (Olanzapine) is a popular and effective alternative to Seroquel. It is not nearly as sedating as seroquel and has more manageable side effects. But it does have 1 interesting side effect; akathisia, the inability to remain still. I experienced that and it was a double edge side effect, in a way it was kinda fun, but scary at the same time.
Peace and love
