If so what did you go on to do?
I'm thinking about these majors after pursuing medical and realizing that I would hate to be a doctor and only wanted the knowledge of the human body that med school would give.
I'm more into nutritional science but it seems like all nutrition programs are conventional wisdom bullshit.

i got one in molecular bio.

i really really really really do not recommend you did the same.

i got it because originally i was fascinated in illegal drugs.

then i sobered up and stopped being fascinated in them. ya. FML.

I am working my ass off now to try to get into med school.

If you want to make a decent living, your only real options with the bio degree... short of getting a phd, starting a biotech company, and making millions is go into some type of medicine... be it MD, pharmacist, podiatrist, dentist, etc.

I'm not considering because I'm fascinated with drugs, more so with how the body works. And I will definitely not stop at undergrad; I want to continue to grad school.
I go to UCSB the science is decent here. Isn't a BA similarly useless? I feel like no one other than a lucky few can make decent money with just a bachelors, it's like the new high school diploma.

And are you going to med school because you want to be a doctor or is it the earnings of a doctor you want?

I did not realize how low paying a PhD in Biology/Chem is until after I finished my BA.

The only real way you can make a good living utilizing the knowledge in bio and chemistry... short of starting your own biotech company and making millions, is in medicine.

i am going into medicine because at this point, it is really my only option to make a good living with the bio degree that i have.

i know ppl who are nearly 40 with a PhD in some type of basic science and make ~40-50k. i want to make more money than that so i can one day afford to have a family etc

:(
Very discouraging, but thanks for the advice. It's good to get a real world perspective on things, even if it's really depressing lol.

Ya i mean i do not know how old you are... but I would imagine you are 16-23... when you are that age, including myself at that age, you think that you can easily get by on little to no money for the rest of your life... but then your hormones change (very scientific lol) and you mature and realize that being poor fucking sucks and and having money just makes things so much easier...

not saying that you need to strive to be a billionaire but i mean its nice to be able to pay the bills every month and not have to worry about going bankrupt if you ever have a medical emergency or if you want to treat yourself to nice things every now and then like going out to a nice dinner..

If you want a degree that is 4 years and terminal (eg no grad school) , engineering is really the only thing you can get away with doing that now a days...

starting salary for computer science/engineering majors is around 60k and you get into 6 figures after working for 3 or 4 years easy... often times a company will then pay for your mba etc.

medicine you make real good money (a physician will make anywhere from $130k-1 million depending on what specialty you go into) but it takes forever...
4 years UG 4 years med school then residency which is 3 years minimum (general practitioner/psychiatrist ) to 10 years max (cardiothoractic surgeon) ...

A good thing about getting a MD/DO degree is if you are truly interested in research you can always do it (which I hopefully plan on doing ) but then you can see patients on the side to make $.

I tried to go into physiology and my uni didnt have it so they steered me into exercise & movement science... in retrospect I wouldve gone biochem or just plain bio I think.

ExSci = personal training, graduate school / research, or uhh not much else GLHF basically sums it up.

I would definitely recommend nutritional science if you are interested in it. It's one of the harder majors at a lot of places really, you'll take a year of orgo and a bunch of other fancy shmancy courses. Also we all know how much society needs a better diet :\

I'll complete my BS in organic chem in may, but I'm continuing on to get my masters instead of entering the workforce. I figure it can't hurt to further my education while the job market still sucks. I aim to do pharmaceutical development once I complete my MS.

Hey cutecute
I have a B.S. in Biology with the intention of getting a masters in animal behavior/nutrition. Little did I know that I would be earning minimum wage taking that path. I now work in health care doing absolutely nothing that has to do with my education but living comfortably on about 50K a year.

My suggestion is to go where the market/money is the best, then you will be able to follow what you enjoy after you are able to keep a roof over your head and a side of beef on the table (heehee)

My little sis just graduated with a degree in anthropology 4.0 gpa, phi kappa phi, Summa Cume Laude and that was back in last may. And what is she doing now? Basically nothing. She volunteers at the local zoo doing primate enrichment. She made the same mistake I did. Following what you want to do in your heart instead of what is smart. Do what is smart first so that later on you can do what is in your heart.

I am fortunate enough to have my own canine behavior modification business, unfortunately in this economy it won't pay all the bills. But, one day!!
