Anyone else notice benzo's seem to have an effect on your throat and mouth when you're eating and drinking? It's really hard to describe but I think it has to do with the swallowing mechanism: it seems to go easier, like my throath's a little wider or something. Maybe because of benzo's muscle relaxant properties?

I never really noticed that, but I have noticed that my vision is better on benzos, which I also attribute to the muscle relaxant properties. On the contrary, my vision gets worse when I am on stimulants, which is probably because it tightens up my muscles.

That's a interesting side effect that I have not heard of. I'm glad you posted this.

This might explain why older patients choke on food or drink for no apparent reason. Thank you for this insight.

benzodiazepines weaken the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach which explains what you are experiencing.

I haven't noticed improved sight, I haven't noticed improved uh.. ability to swallow? But I have noticed that I get the WORST munchies on Benzos. As in way worse than what pot or alcohol gives me.

I find this SUPER interesting. I don't notice enhanced ease of swallowing while on my Alprazolam, however-
When I run out, the first sign of withdrawal is tightness in the muscles in my throat. It isn't just something I notice when swallowing either; I feel like my throat and glands are swollen. I find myself constantly trying to stretch the muscles in my throat and in the front of my neck but nothing helps.
This is something that doesn't go away until I am able to refill my prescription and it's quite annoying. Sometimes it's scary when it gets really bad, and it's uncomfortable for sure!
I don't take large amounts- I take it primarily in the evening to help with sleep, and no more than once during the day.
Thanks for the topic, OP!

Do you have a source for that? I'm not doubting it, but it's best to post a link supporting your claim. Plus, I don't really know what that means, so would like to read the info on it.

Yes, the benzo munchies are pretty common.

I get munchies from benzos also, I always figured it was due to lowered inhibitions -- an increased desire / ability to go out and to do things that make you happy and comfortable, like eating.

Alcohol does the same thing, but I mostly figured that was b/c I've been out partying for however many hours since diner/last meal, so ud invariably get hungry and the lowered inhibitions caused by the booze means you eat without shame/manners/thought --- stuffing ur face with a double cheesburger while using ur fingers as both a fork and a napkin

But on topic, yeah I've felt the relaxed mouth thing on benzos before, its one of the things I look for to mark the coming up / peaking phase of the buzz. I know I've gotten into the strongest part of the high when I feel that sensation

I always hear about people getting the munchies form benzo's, this seems so strange to me, it seems benzo's decrease my appetite significantly. That or I just end up forgetting to eat hahaha

Thank you for the replies! Seems like I'm not the only one noticing this. And now that we're discussing the benzo munchies: I don't have them, I even have a decreased appetite and I think it might have something to do with the side effect I mentioned here in the OP. It really makes eating unenjoyable. Also, having fizzy drinks in my mouth and swallowing them feels kinda different somehow.

By the way, I'm once again amazed at how friendly and helpful everyone here is. Wish my real life "druggie friends" were like that lol.

depends on the benzo really - if im taking em sublingually (xanax) i love to eat something sweet to mask the biterness, same goes for diaz...

if i get some clonaz/nitraz i love the menthol minty taste and the numbness too... mmmmmmm

while i'm on em though i LOVE cherryade for some reason. no idea why, tea also goes down nicely :)

i kinda think i forget to eat when i'm on benzos... i think they decrease my appetite just by making me forget about food haha

Benzos make me hungry almost like Cannabis. They're generally a do-stuff-that-makes-you-feel-good drug class for me (this is good relative to what I'm going through right now, wow!)

I know this is hardly on topic...but WHAT, may I ask, is "cherryade"? It sounds delicious, and have never heard of it.

It was always the opposite for me. Id purge and everyone else would get muchies they would say. I never got any munchies.

Off topic poster above lol cherryade ... cherry(lemon)ade See how it works. yes?Fantastic

"In addition to direct mucosal injury, many commonly used medications including nitroglycerins, anticholinergics, beta-adrenergic agonists, aminophyllines, and benzodiazepines promote/facilitate gastroesophageal reflux by reducing lower esophageal sphincter pressure" - Barrets Esophagus

I read a few other things. It's basically what everyone is saying. It relaxes your esophagus, and that creates the feeling of easy swallowing you describe. It also causes reflux from the other direction for the same reason. Very interesting.

When I read the title of your post I assumed it was about your throat feeling all fucked up the day after. That was me when I used a lot of benzos, but it was insane sleep apnea causing that. FTW.
