Anyone else just outgrow addiction?

There's evidence to suggest that people engage in less "risk taking behavior" (including illegal drug use) as they get older. I remember someone posting an article here, I think it was by Stanton Peele maybe? about this topic a while back. Seems to be born out by personal experience actually

The problem is the fact that the term "outgrow" is kind of ambiguous and doesn't really say anything substantive about the reasons, factors etc. that led someone to stop behaving in a certain way.

I outgrew drinking . I think I just drank a lot when I was a stay at home mom and bored . After putting the kids to bed I would have a few drinks , it was “me” time, pretty much every night . Gained weight from all the rum and cokes all the time. Once i started working I just didn’t drink anymore but that’s also when I started taking the oxy . So I guess I replaced drinking with opiates , at least opiates don’t damage your organs and health . They are a lot more expensive though .

^ they damage your psyche. In a very sneaky way because you can perform so well on them, even better than sober sometimes, so you think they aren't doing damage. when you find yourself hating people and lashing out - its the opioids. When I stop opioids these symptoms vanish for me so perhaps the damage is repariable.

opioids are definitley a better drug to be on than alcohol as long as you know your pills are real pharma.

I've noticed it's incredibly common for alcoholics to stop drinking when they discover opiates. Personally, ever since touching painkillers booze has permanently lost it's buzz (even when 100% sober).

They're both pain relievers... booze numbs the pain. And as far as healthy choices go, ironically opiates are way less damaging than booze provided you don't overdose. Legal system makes no sense in how it prohibits certain substance uses over others. Booze has been more damaging than meth use for a large number of users.
