Hi.
I have taken a fairly high amount of drugs over the past 4 - 5 years including Anti Depressants which put me through a few phases of chronic constipation.
I don't eat much fruit or veg & do eat allot of red meat.
Recently I decided to take a break from the drugs for a while and was wondering if anyone out there has gotten any benefits from doing a Liver / kidney / Colon Cleanse kind of thing?
I did a bit of research and havn't found many positive experiences.

Maybe I would be better off just eating lots of fibre and drinking lots of water.

What do you think?

Well no fruit + veg and lots of red meat is a good combination not only for constipation but cancer and heart problems, so even if you wanted to do a detox it'd still be worth changing your diet, immediatley.

A good combination of fruits, vegetables, white meats (chicken, fish) and a smaller portions of lean red meat (lamb is a good one) maybe twice a week would be a better place to start.

Things high in fibre would also help your digestive system as would drinking water, as I'm sure many health nuts/wannabe nutritionists (myself included) heavily advocate here.

Low sugar and low fat Wholemeal bread and cereals, low fat yohgurts, soy milk/soy products (some people may disagree here), low fat cheese (basically any low fat dairy), lean meat, fruit, vegetables, unsalted raw nuts and dried fruits would be a good start.

A good idea is to start getting some meal plans in order or at the very least a skeleton plan which dietry intakes taken care of. Split them up into meals/snacks and aim for 3 serves of fruit, 1 serve of dairy and 4 serves of vegetables today (1 cup of uncooked vegetables is what is recommended from memory).

Move away from vegetables high in starch and empty carbs as well, such as potato.

Liver detoxes are great, if only for the simple reason that, even if you dont believe in them, it brings awareness back to the body, what you are putting into it and helps you get back on track with a sensible healthy eating routine.

To detoxify the kidneys simply increase your water intake to around about 2-2.5 litres p/day. The cleansing of the bowel will happen automatically when you do a liver detox and make improvements to diet.

To do a liver detox the most important aspect that alot of 'detox' plans miss out on is that you need protein to detoxify. Alot of these juice fasts or raw vegetable fasts are great in theory but they dont actually provide the body with the basic nutrients like protein that are ESSENTIAL for detoxification.

So having said that, if you want to do a good liver detox concentrate on fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, legumes, wholegrains (brown rice, oats, buckwheat, spelt, rye, kamut, quinoa) and good quality proteins such as fish, organic eggs and organic meats such as chicken and turkey. Usually i wouldnt allow for red meat if i was doing one myself but for you, if you can get ORGANIC red meat then having that 1-2 x per week during the detox is fine.

And i really want to emphasise that it's important to try and get everything organic. You are trying to detoxify so there's no use increasing the burden on the liver.

I would also get a good herbal remedy, most notably St mary's thistle tincture or capsule to take during the detox.

Drink plently of water, herbal teas are allowed, especially dandelion root tea is a good one. Upon rising drink 1 glass of water with the juice of half a lemon as this is a bitter which acts to stimulate digestion and encourage the liver into detoxification.

Obviously you want to avoid all alcohol, ciggerettes, drugs, coffee and any other stimulants. But also avoid wheat products, dairy products, all refined and processed foods and sugar.

Stick to this for about 2-4 weeks and you're set.

I recomend fish oil capsules for the omega 3 fatty acids, very good for you, omega 3 is one of the biggest deficiencies if not the biggest, and is good for mental health as it is brain food, not to mention it is also good for the heart, I could go on.

Just staying away from drugs, alcohol, cigarettes has probably done wonders for my kidney and liver then I can quantify right now. Occassional juice fasts, high fibre intake and lots of water keep my engines in tip top shape.

To be honest I can't really fathom putting such poison(hard drugs, junk food, high fructose corn syrup ;)) in my body the way I used to....It really took a toll on my body and inner organs.

When I used to be a bodybuilder I had about six litres of water per day (yes, six). Could this have done any damage to my kidneys?

I had to piss in public so many times, it's a wonder I didn't get caught.

And u guys you really think milk thistle helps?

There have been numerous studies that suggest it is of benefit to the liver.

HEHEH no offence taken, bu t seriously when I think about the amount of chemicals and SHIT (litterally) I worry, but nah plenny of water & fiber should flush out ma system.
and by the time where 70 (if we make it that long we could probably get a new liiver of e-bay dirt cheap, dunno about a brain or kidney though. The operation for one of those would be quite pricey.

I did one of those packaged 9 or 10 day cleansing diets (liver, kidney, intestines and stomach) a couple of years back and it worked mad wonders. I wasn't allowed to eat dairy, any meats, sugar, alcohol, caffeine, etcetera. After two days of headaches cleared, all the originally bland food began to taste really nice.
I've been at my healthiest and strongest ever since.

I might do another one shortly.

A bowel cleanse might help immensley. After a couple years of heavy abuse of Hydrocodone, I went through a bowel cleansing program. Let's just say that I was shocked at the amount of crud that was released as a result of it.

Doh, that's right, it was bowel, not stomach. Liver, kidney, intestines and bowel.

The only downside to doing the bowel cleanse is having to be near or have quick access to a toilet for the 5 day (or whatever) duration of it. Because when you have to go, you HAVE to go.

I used the Dr. Schulze 5 Day Bowel Cleanse. It was something like 40 capsules of Intestinal Formula #2 per day, with as many Intestinal Formula #1 tabs as necessary to get things flowing.

It did do a good job of cleaning things out, but you need to be in a position to be able to get to a toilet quickly. I did mine while on vacation from the real job, so it wasn't too much of a problem for me.
