In my ongoing quest for things to do that isnt taking drugs, online chess is the latest idea that sprung to mind yesterday. Ive played on and off for years, never really been much good. I mean I understand the 'check that your piece is gonna be safe from all possible attacks the opponent can reply with before making a move' thing, and just doing that, and protecting your own pieces i can hold my own for a time against opponents that are much better than me, but that only gets me so far, one careless slip up and its all over. Once i completely fluked a game winning move against a high ranked player, i didnt even realise what i had done until afterwards.

The whole thinking several moves ahead thing does my head in, as there are so many things an opponent can do, and its impossible for my human brain to anticipate them all? Any tips from anyone? Do you have to learn and memorise loads of move sequences and stuff? 8(

A few years ago I got really into chess.. I was taking a lot of speed and playing Chess vs my mates all day, 3 or 4 days out of the week..

I actually got really good within a month or two.. When I worked out how i won one of my last games I played (in that period).. i was thinking 7 or 8 moves ahead.. The first one was sacrificing my queen.. from there it was unavoidable for him to escape the eventual check mate..

Thinking moves ahead will make more sense the more you play it.

I'll give you a game of chess on chessjam.com some time :)

As for tips.. I'm not really sure.. I learned by doing.. I'm sure there are a lot of tips and guides online.

Nah no tips and havent played it for years... i'll play you though

Aye, not played for years but let me know if you fancy a game in real-life at some point when I'm back oop north.

I enjoy Chess but I just havent played it very much in a while. Im also not used to the clocking system really since whenever I played with other people it was honestly usually someone who rather sucked balls at it and therefore we would forego the times

I will say this, I prefer to keep my bishops over my rooks

yeah, kind of makes you get a little too comfortable you know...

I like chess, but not that great at it and haven't played for years; i always take too long (and don't like the timers) so i piss off my opponents - i think i get a bit of AP (analysis paralysis in the 'board gaming world'). I'll give you a game though (we could maybe do a small drugs-chess tournament with the responses here...)

You ever played Go? I like it but still don't really understand it - in some ways simpler than chess, in others many times more complex (apparently they still haven't managed to make computer go players good enough to beat good humans (the computer always beats me though - chess they can do cos there's a lower number of possible moves or something). I also like some other 'eurogames' (geeky board games like Puerto Rico, Agricola, Power Grid, Twilight Struggle etc), which you can play online but it sort of defeats the purpose (and you have to already know the rules).

I love playing chess stoned - it just takes a very, very long time because my memory is pretty much shot to fuck, and playing chess relies upon being able to think several moves ahead.... I still find it very enjoyable though, and taught my son to play it when he was 7. At the moment I can still beat him, but he's getting pretty good and has the advantage of a completely non drug addled brain, so it won't be long......

I used to be really into and really good at chess, I was one of those geeky fucks that did chess club in primary school. Don't know what happened, I just seemed to lose it somehow and I haven't played it for ages now. Maybe I should by a cheap set and give it another go. Don't like the online ones, it's not the same.

for me its backgammon - use to play semi-professionally, when i lived in tenerife i use to play 2-300 games a day, it was a way to make a living - now playing it online
