Hi,

I'm new on here.

I used to not mind stillnox (also known as Ambien) which I got onto for insomnia, but proceeded to misuse. I understand it to be an antihistamine? I had some mild hallucenigenic experiences on it at different times..

I am now curious about the cough syrup Benadryl? I understand this also to be an antishistamine? From looking on the net - it looks like it's most commonly misused with the intention of using it as a psychedelic drug? Can anyone out there provide me with a comparison of the 2 drugs? (stillnox and Benadryl) I would kind of like to get an idea of what I'd be getting myself into with the latter?

FYI: I've never touched psychedelics and I'm aprehensive about the hallucinegic effects - even tho anything I ever experienced on stillnox wasn't bad, perhaps because at the same time I felt anthaetised - and I'm an opiate user usually.

You are incorrect. Ambien is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic drug. It is NOT an antihistamine. If you want an uncomfortable experience that is similar to a mixture of akathisia (complete bodily discomfort) and schizophrenia (you won't be in control over your thoughts at times, and you will hear voices and see things that are not pleasant), then go ahead. But, don't expect it to be anything like ambien.

ok, maybe I am wrong about ambien and stillnox being the same thing - I know that stillnox is definately an antishistamine tho...
I don't really like the sound of what you say Benadryl is like. Thanks for the info tho

there is NO similarity between the two, other then they both make you trip-if thats what you would call the hellish effects of excessive benadryl.

Ambien is a Z-drug, a class of drugs related to benzos, whereas Benadryl is an antihistamine that has the honor of being one of the only 3 "true hallucinogenics."

Taking alot of benadryl will causes you to hallucinate complete people and object that you are unable to distinguish from reality. YOull be taking a shit, listening to your friend in the bathtub talking about an upcoming movie, and reply only to find out he was never there.

This will happen over and over again. Smoking imaginary cigs, pokimg nonexistant bug.

Best of all, every position you try to lay down in feels like the most uncomfertable position possible, so sleep or relaxation is impossible.

Thats my 2 cents,
forensic bob

The stuff that makes you hallucinate is Diphenhydramine. The OD in mice was 500mg/kg (according to erowid). I've taken 800mg of pure dph pills, which was a horrible idea. I almost went insane from the tripping and it ended with several minor seizures. It's not really a high, more of a mind f*ck.

Bloody hell 800mg was the ,lowest dose that would even effect me. I loved diphenhydramine when I used it, but I realised I was taking too many risks with super high doses.

If you take too much you don't really remember anything anyway.

The only bad side effect for me is the racing heartbeat you get.

Diphenhydramine is terrible for me, I used it recreationally once and that is the last time I will.

You're wrong about what Ambien is though. It's a "z-benzodiazepine", one of a group of drugs derived from benzodiazepines to treat short term transient insomnia, or mild inconsistent insomnia. This class of drugs doesn't work for me. If you want something you're sure you won't abuse, I recommend looking in to an antipsychotic with sedating side effects. I take quetiapine (Seroquel) as my main drug to treat chronic insomnia (25mg/night), and I have been for 4 years now.

It's sedating side effects are, interestingly enough, actually related to the antihistamine receptors in the brain. The lower the dose, starting at 25mg, the more sedation there will be, a kind of paradox effect. If you're worried about taking an antipsychotic and uncomfortableness that surrounds them and their side effects, Seroquel, as far as antipsychotics go, is a very "clean" drug. Mild side effects (25mg is a very low dose, people using the drug for antipsychotic benefits can go to 1g/day) and generally no hangover.

Other options include trazodone, mirtazapine (older antidepressants with sedation that also have a low potential for abuse). After these there are the drugs with high potentials for abuse (opiates, benzodiazeapines, z-benzos, more).

Good luck, if one personal experience means anything I've found Seroquel to knock me out no matter what I took the day before ;)

YEah...Seroquel will just knock you out cold in your tracks. Took it once and fell asleep mid-shit

There are no z-benzo's it is a class of its own with zopiclone and couple other one's.

Thanks Cage rat,

I have tried something similar for sleeping - it may be the same drug you are talking about, under a slightly different name ?- I was prescribed it for the side affects of helping with sleep, the GP said it was an oldskool anti-psychotic - I thought the name was siniquan - or something like it? It didn't really help to get to sleep - but once asleep I would stay asleep for a good ammount of time. Mind you, my insomnia (whilst always been a problem) was more irratic due to complicated grief and trauma - so what would usually work for me wasn't sufficient at the time. I didn't like the affect of the drug as I found I was more sensitive to any kind of unsuspecting noise the following day.

As for Ambien - I admit - I have probably got my information wrong about it. For some reason I thought it was the equilvelant to the Australian drug - stillnox. Perhaps I am also wrong about stillnox being an antihistamine? I haven't researched it - I'm getting my info from an experience I had an (OD) the ambo's told me it was an antihistamine (well - I'm pretty sure that's what they said) - and I never questioned it since.

Thanks for all the info - much appreciated!

Sinequan isn't an antipsychotic, it's a sedative tricyclic antidepressant, which, like all the tricyclics, has an antihistamine effect.

And Stilnox IS Ambien, just another name for the INN zolpidem.

Google is your best friend when you looking for any sort of information, especially on most pharmaceuticals. Erowid is also possibly the best one resource on any specific widely used recreational chemical, from research chemicals to the most commonly prescribed abusable drugs (and also less abuse prone ones), and has a lot of trip reports/links to research.

I took 150mg Diphenhydramine knowing it was safe to OD on it as I needed to sleep. I vastly underestimated the strength and I was seeing ghosts and all sorts of things everywhere. I was talking to them too. The hallucinations were similar to ambien in that they felt delerious, however ambien was less intense by far.
