I was thinking would taking an anti-dep such as an SSRI for like 6 months or a year have any lasting effects on my brain (neurochemistry?)
my sister seems to think that I would become more dull/zombified if i use anti-deps and even if i discontinue them after a period of time...

have i got nothing to lose in trialing the range for my depression?

The only actual long lasting effects (SSRI withdrawal is relatively short) would be the sexual side effects. You may notice that you will have an unusually low libido, genital anesthesia, ejaculation anhedonia, and premature ejaculation. (This is a primary report)
SSRI's actually cause neurogenesis, so you will probably end up with a less stressed ravaged brain.

However, if you truly need an SSRI, don't be afraid to use it. Rarely will this sexual dysfunction last for a very long time (Maybe a couple months, give or take). Also, there are things that you can do (and that helped others) to lessen these after effects. Burpropion, gingko biloba, and yohimbe have all been reported to attenuate SSRI induced sexual dysfunction. And again, treating depression is more important than temporary sexual side effects.

Here is wikipedia's article on the topic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-SSRI_sexual_dysfunction
