Antidepressants Could Make Your Brain Bleed, Cause Hemorrhagic Strokes

Other than antibiotics, SSRIs are the most over/mis prescribed drugs out there IMO.
Couldn't agree more. My doctor told me lexapro is approved for safe long term use and wrote a script for it like its skittles. How is that research or information even possible to conclude when ssri/snri are relatively new in medicine. My guess is CEO's wanting to make billions at the risk of their customers health.

Much of what I'm reading in this thread is anecdotal, non-fact based rambling.

Big pharma is bad. We should all become Scientologists and give up medicine, right?

SSRI's saved my life. Some of you in here think that depression is merely a small hurdle that all people should be able to jump over on a whim. It's not. For many it is a brick fucking wall. I'm not going to share my diagnosis on the public forum but some of you need to show some compassion for people who have not been as fortunate as you to be a healthy fucking know-it-all.

So you're bipolar and don't use meds, big fucking deal. For every person who has a major depressive or affective disorder and can make it without meds, there is a hundred who simply cannot do it.

I agree with your post.

If SSRIs or even SSNRIs were a major concern or brain hemorrhaging was an actual side effect of them you'd have heard about it decades ago when Prozac was new, and there would be tons of cases where this happened since a lot of people are on SSRIs or have been on them.

For many people eating well, exercising constantly, avoiding booze and avoiding illegal drugs, and therapy do not work at getting rid of depression or other things SSRIs are used to treat but the SSRI does work and without it they'd be dead by their own hand.

Do some actual research on this and you'll see that it's not definite that they do make your brain bleed.

Why defend antidepressants? You either have cash involved with their sales or you're just ignorant.

I have experience with antidepressants... I took them every day for a week after being prescribed and almost moved to California when I was 16. The doctor told me it may make me suicidal... but that that was mostly just overblown. It didn't make me suicidal a bit. It made me happy as hell and manic, the doctor didn't tell me that would happen.

I guess I could see how such a radical shift in brain chemistry could benefit an extremely small proportion of the population.

You're calling Priest ignorant and you only have a week's worth of experience? Sounds to me like you're the one being ignorant.

There are many different types of antidepressants and SSRI's. Trying one for a week back when you were 16 hardly makes you an expert on the matter. That's like saying, "The first time I drank, I puked. Therefore nobody should drink alcohol....ever."

I have been on one medication or another since 2003. Some of them, in fact, did not work. So I told my doctor the problem and he adjusted my dosage or changed meds as needed. That's what doctors do. Many of these medications do have side effects that typically go away once they have been in your system a while. Sometimes it takes more than a month to see if they are even working.

I'm not claiming to be an expert on all medications for all illnesses, I'm just saying that the success stories outnumber the failure stories. We just rarely hear the success stories prolly because people are afraid to admit that they take meds in order to function.

Don't read this post and think I enjoy being on these medications, because I don't. I can no longer travel out of the country on extended trips because I have to refill my prescription every month. But I have to live with the fact that I cannot function without them. Would a diabetic refuse insulin just because he didn't like the meds? No.

Maybe some of you have been misdiagnosed. Maybe some of you have been prescribed these drugs when you don't really need them. I'm not arguing with this. I'm just saying that they do work for a lot of people. More than you would like to admit.

Here in the UK, SSRIs (and benzos) are often, IMO, over-prescribed by lazy and/or ignorant GPs who should really be referring patients for mental health counselling / therapy.

Nope I'm not either of those things. Thanks for trolling though. If I really hypothetically were a major stockholder in a medical company or a busy pharm. sales rep why would I go on this site?

My life is actually pretty boring despite what people want to believe about me.

Correlation, possibilty, and theory do not prove causality.

People really need to learn this.

I believe you are offered therapy / mental health counselling when diagnosed.. I was both times I've been prescribed SSRI's..

It's ultimately down to the patient.. they can take the offer or therapy and or medicine..

Great post here, and mighty refreshing after reading all the ignorant "ssri's don't work, big pharma is evil" garbage above. Are SSRI's overprescribed? Arguably. But they do benefit an enormous amount of people, people for whom nothing else works. Depression can be crippling. Like too crippling to even fathom doing anything about it. For many people SSRI's provide the necessary help to begin putting oneself back together.

Is "big pharma" an overreaching behemoth? Arguably, once again. but this doesn't mean that all of the products and research put forth are all immediately discounted. There is an understandable backlash in modern society but it disturbs me to read and hear many of the generalizations present in this thread and throughout the internet. Things are much more complicated than that!

i have met more people that have told me ssris and snris have done more damage to them than good. feeling hollow, like dead inside was one of the common side effects i heard. I have never in my life taken an ssri or snri, they are extremely powerful drugs that mess with a very sensitive neurological function that science doesnt fully understand. plus it seems like there are new papers coming out all the time on the risks of these drugs let alone tohe over rxing of them. Feeling anxious? have some zoloft! panic attacks? have some effexor! the way the pharm industry dumps these free samples on the doctors is rediculous! my doctor said he has a closet in his office FILLED with free samples of various drugs and most of them are anti depressants. when i told him i have bad anxiety and take xanax, there was no disscussion, he pulled out his rx pad and said how many do you want?

granted thats not exactly a good thing because now ill end up addicted to those, but benzos have been around since the 50's and are a hell of a lot safer than ssris, its just that many dr's are terrified of rxing them, and forget it if you have some kind of drug abuse history in your medical file because there is no way you will get anything. maybe a small rx of .25s of xanax or ativan but thats it.

edit- cant forget to say that there are ppl who do well on these medications, there is no doubt about that. i just think they are over rx'd and other options should be considered first before getting out the ol free sample bag of antidepressants.

Folley, could it be that your attitude toward ssris is a symptom of your bipolar? I too have been diagnosed as bipolar and I too think that ssris are shit, but I can't tell if that's a manic delusion. I entirely distrust my perceptions on this.

hahaha, I sure don't think so.

My symptoms are mostly gone now, at least non-noticeable. At the very least, I've gotten used to them. TBH, my depression was mostly brought out my MDMA and methamphetamine abuse, but it has always been there since I was a kid. I went through 6 months of HELL, I probably considered killing myself everyday during that time.

What stopped me, you may ask? I only had a .22 rifle, and that wasn't big enough to blow my brains out with.

Then, out of the blue, one mushroom trip changed my life. I completely turned my attitude around and I've been the happiest in my life since then.. weird huh??

If SSRIs can help you, that's great! Good for you. But in my time over in Ecstasy Discussion, I've just simply seen WAY too many people complaining from the complications they receive from them.. some people even needing to go to the Emergency Room, or dealing with suicidal thoughts after switching ADs.

I guess I feel like Anti-Depressants are supposed to make you content on living with depression, when you should be constantly trying to get over it and better yourself..

Back when I was like 8 my Grandparents assured my parents that I would need ADs.. yet I turned out just fine without having my 5-HT system down-regulated over time.

That explains everything.

I'm pretty sure MDMA and ecstasy have quite devastating effects on the brain compared to what you guys are saying about SSRI's. People taking ecstasy have no business messing around with AD's or SSRI's. Or maybe I got that backwards....people on AD's or SSRI's have no business messing around with ecstasy.

I find it laughable that a bunch of x-heads are complaining about their prescribed medications. There goes all your credibility in this thread :|

Hmm. Not from what I have seen and the people I have spoken to. Mostly it's, "Here's some pills. NEXT!"

The lack of follow-up appointments and treatments is also worrying.

Doctors are there to diagnose and advise.. the decisions are down to the patient.

Me and many of my friends were all offered therapy as well as medication (for depression, anxiety, etc, etc.. not all SSRIs)..

And if you're not offered it there's nothing stopping you seeking it.

If you don't like the medication for any reason; you are supposed to (and i was told to) tell the doctor.. different SSRI's (and all medications) have different affects on different people. Some might not work for some but will work for others. When you are an adult it's pretty much your responsibility to discuss any issues you have with your medication / treatment with your doctor.. If you don't like what your doctor is doing then get another one.

Kids on the other hand.. man.. some of them doctors make me sick.

I must say, it may have been due to MDMA usage. Poetic irony.

It's more that it set off an underlying condition.

I haven't been prescribed any drugs, I personally do not need them. Now, what I DO know is that SSRIs by themselves can cause long term serotonin down-regulation that is similar to what is caused from when you abuse MDMA. Except instead of it occurring in a short amount of time, that neuro-damage builds up for years on end, eventually worsening your depression... if what we understand about serotonin is correct that is.

^ SSRIs have been shown to cause nurogenesis in the hippocampus, one of, if not THE, reasons it works.

Low density hippocampus' have been linked to depression.

Sorry, I am guilty of judging the class as a whole. I had a very bad experience with venlafaxine. Also I don't like the idea of what SSRIs do to the brain, but I'll admit they benefit some people.
