Nightclubs in Italy are to try out a cone-shaped, sealable glass intended to prevent partygoers' drinks being spiked with the so-called date-rape drug, according to the its French inventors.

Made of coloured plastic, the disposable "Billglass", designed by Stephane Mathieu and Richard Bille from Nice in southeastern France, will be introduced in several clubs across the Alps in Italy from January.

Filled through its base and sealed by the barman, the glass's top can be pierced with a straw once in the drinker's hands, to prevent a would-be rapist from slipping the colourless, odorless drug into the drink.

The sedative drug, gamma-hydroxybutyerate (GHB), can render victims incapable of withstanding sexual assault and makes them lose memory.

Developed as an anaesthetic, it can cause vomiting, breathing problems and loss of consciousness, and can be fatal if mixed with other drugs or alcohol.

"In nightclubs, GHB is most often used in the short time a person takes to carry a glass from the bar to their intended victim," according to Mathieu.

"Some venues fit their glasses with lids but they are very easy to lift off. To pour GHB into the Billglass, you would either have to use a syringe or insert the straw yourself, and aim straight into it - in the dark, in just a few seconds."

Mathieu's associate Bille, a nightclub security worker in Nice, believes the scale of the problem in southern France is underestimated.

The inventors intend to use the sale proceeds from the Billglass, which comes in two sizes and costs the same as an ordinary plastic glass, to fund an awareness-raising campaign in their region about the drug's dangers.

I hope this works... dont have a high opinion of date rapists.

Although anyone who wishes to give me free drugs is welcome, the rumour around my home town with all the people who know nothing about drugs is that people are putting spped and eccies into their drinks haha, so stupid, with the cost of either down here its not worht the effort
 
It seems like a lot of effort for the barman and quite an expense no matter how cheap the glasses are made. My guess is that it won't catch on but I could be wrong :\

They've also forgot to create a glass that stops the number one date rape drug...alcohol ;)

It is France, of course it will catch on. The bars will have to buy them, and if they don't, the government will charge them with destructive competition.

Don't believe me? Some maids in France recently got sued by the national government for destructive competition, because instead of taking the bus to work (which was a "private" business) they decided to carpool together.
 
I wonder how it is "sealed by the bartender".... I don't know, seems like a big pain in the ass

AHAHAHAAH! And they wonder why they have twice the unemployment rate of the US.

More on topic, there was a recent study out of the UK that found that of the people who reported to police that they had been drugged and raped, only 2% actually had a drug detected in their system that they hadn't knowingly taken themselves. A lot of people who thought their drinks had been spiked apparently just couldn't hold their liquor.
 
Last time I checked unemployment was 5.5% in America, and going down (2004 year). 11% is pretty bad. They have so much social spending too, too bad.

in indonesia they sell bottled water like this....

As far as I recall, they were sued by the bus company, not by the government. And the case was thrown out in no time
 
you wanna talk about "destructive competition" you can talk about it right here in the US: telco companies have sued cities that want to offer free wifi services. you'll have to find something else to bash the french bout sorry creative random =D
 
gd idea......im not down with date rape either - ive tried G without alcohol, just cos my mate whos got black power contacts had a few wen i was staying at his place and i was needing a gd sleep.....tis quite strong, nice feeling tho, a bit like wen u go into the operating room and get given that sedative that leaves u awake but unaware kind-of
sticking utha drugs in drink is quite retarded 2 - giving anyone drugs without consent is retarded..........sum ppl just rnt meant 2 do drugs
was just reflecting the utha day on a skool friend who was 'doped' wif just a bit of common nz P in her drink.......it took her 4 painstaking yrs plus all that rehab bullshit 2 get off it and she was neva even into pot before that
putting together a cup like that mite b laborous but wud b a gd safety measure
