Im having surgery next monday and i have a pretty hight tolerance to diazepam, im worried that the drugs they'll give me for anesthesia wont knock me out as they should, im presuming they use benzos

Can anyone spread some light on this?

Many thanks

I had a decent benzo addiction going into knee surgery and whatever they gave me had me gooooooone

the anesthesia itself isn't produced by the benzos i think... isn't it propofol or something that they use now... they used to use ketamine for anesthetics.. but too many people claimed they were encountering God, so theyve pretty much stopped using that on humans...

when i went for a general anasthetic i was on 3mg xanax++40mg diazepam+2mg loprazolam daily (pretty high tolerance) and it still knowcked me out like BLADOW!

They have so many types of GABA-a anesthetics, it's crazy.

They blow all of the best GABA-a drugs we know out of the air like shotguns to birds.

I always remember how it is right before I go out in surgery.
I feel fantastic, and my sight starts to pixel-ate. Everything goes in slow motion, then you don't feel real, and your body is buzzing really hard. Your arms and legs are impossible to move.

Blammo!! you're out. Like 2 seconds pass in your head, and you are now in the recovery room.

And it slowly reverses itself so you buzz when you wake up. Fucking awesome.

Thanks guys and gals thats really put my mind at ease!

I was more worried they were going to cancel the op until my tolerence went down, that and of course not being out %100 while they butcher my knee :)

should i tell the anesthesiatist about my tolerance or is there not much need seeming as tho your montitored etc??

They've got a whole firepower of medicines for anesthesia. Not only GABA drugs, but curares, barbs and so on.
For the OP, I would tell them about your tolerance to benzos, so that they can adjust accordingly as soon as possible.
Do not lie to them, tell the whole truth, it's for your health, they don't give a shit if you take 100mg of clonazepam or whatever impossible dose, just be honest.

You have to say something!
They will dose you according to how you react to the drug.

They do not use curare analogs in surgery anymore, they are known to cause a false sense of anesthesia. People can be paralyzed by the curare and still be awake and feel everything, but cannot react to it. They use different types of muscle relaxers now.

Tell your anesthesiologist, trust me they'll be able to knock you out properly regardless (anesthesia is something that modern medicine does super fucking well), but full disclosure is always a good thing-- especially with serious shit like surgery.

Not to mention waking up in the middle of it.

If you have a tolerance to any GABA-A actions, you will have a tolerance to anesthesia. They will dose you accordingly.

These are the main ones used: Propofol, Etomidate, Barbiturates such as methohexital and thiopental. (GABA-A agonist)

Benzodiazepines such as midazolam and diazepam are used for pre-operation sedation.
