Good deal Mystic...glad ya dig the shop (muuuch more to come)...

Right now I'm in the process of loading a bunch of our backstock records along the lines of 'house'. (many were pre-owned by Slater Hogan...which I noticed you bought one of his records from our shop 'the hip therapist EP')...keep an eye out..I'm tossing all the junk records aside and only putting up stuff I feel is quality (amongst that backstock records) onto the website... Quality, not quantity :)

oh yeah...Post Office was closed today...so ur order will ship out tommorow instead..

yeah john was pretty much a local around here for years ( i live very close to new orleans). Ive always enjoyed his sets as well as productions.

So, I just listened to Late Night Groove and here is my review of it.

Overall I like it. Great track selection, for the most part. Smooth mixes especially given the fact that you have only been spinning for a couple of years.

Here is my constructive criticism:

First, I really hate the lyrics on the 1st track - they sound like a dozen coffee house poets could have written them. Sorry, I'm very specific about my vocals.

Second, the set is kind of flat. The mix just goes but there aren't really any peaks. Still, this can happen when the mix is basically all one genre.

Third, while the mixing is smooth, the mixes are all basic and short. I love to hear dramtic mixes that last a couple of minutes, not your basic crossfader from right to left in 32 measures types of mixes. Plus, and maybe it's me, I don't hear to much EQ work.

Still, great job with the mix and congrats on the winning the contest!!!! I'll be downloading your other mix to check out here shortly.

Cheers,
Triple-Alpha

thats for the input, but i do use eqs everytime i mix, not just the crossfader. I just finished a mix that im working on cutting up into tracks and converting to mp3 and uploading, which, IMHO is way better than either of my contest entries. it has elements of deep, funky, and tech house. I think you may like :D

i'll have a new mix up soon as its uploaded for those interested. One other point that i wanted to address. Not all songs sound good with long two minute mixes. I dont play a genre like progressive where it tends to sound really good and most songs are fine for making long, subtle, layered mixes. A lot of the deep house and funky house tracks have really short intros then breakdowns. one good example would be that audio bullys track on late night groove. I have gone through nearly every house track i own and none of them sound good if you try to let them play out through the first breakdwon in the song which comes in after like only 32 beats. I agree though, i try to make long layered mixes every time i can. :D

if it's any consolation mystic, that diamond life vocal is one of very few deep house vocals that I actually like. I think it may be the layering of the backup vocals that really does it for me. good stuff :)

yeah i like vocal-less deep house usually, i just think that is a great track (but not all people are gonna like the same stuff) to start a set with

Mystic Styles - I hope you tooks my words as constructive, because that is how they were meant. I am glad to hear you use EQs and, as I suspected, I just wasn't hearing it, which means you are smoother than I assumed.

I also spin deep, funky, jazzy, swing, and latin house and find that long mixes work almost all of the time, it is just a matter of how you use the EQs. I also have an Electrix EQ Killer which adds a whole new dimension to working the EQs. I love mixing thru the breakdowns in tracks, either the last or the first, or usually both. I enjoy bringing in the new track slowly, maybe starting with just the hi-hat or a small slice of the mid, carry that thru the first break, then start to bring in more elements. In a process like this you have all of the sudden held two tracks together for 256 measures or more.

Again, excellent work. I look forward to hearing more of your mixes.

Cheers,
Triple-Alpha
