i've been taking adderall for ADD for about 6 weeks now and am prescribed 50mg xr per day. A couple days ago I had a test coming up that I ran out of time to study for and had to stay up all night, so I ended up taking 140mg all together from Tuesday morning until Wednesday morning, spreading the doses out over about a 24 hour period. I was worried about this ruining my tolerance, because 50mg a day was working really well for me, so I took 300mg dxm on Wednesday night. My question is, do you think that 140mg in a 24 hour period will significantly diminish the positive effects (being able to study and focus well, not euphoria) I was previously experiencing? Thanks!

The best way to skyrocket your tolerance is take Adderall at a high dose like that

If I were you, I would abstain from Adderall for 4 or so days... that's my strategy... works well too

I can't guarantee your Adderall EUPHORIA tolerance will come back, but I do know the STUDY tolerance probably won't increase at all really... (unless you make a habit of it)

^this.
taking a NMDA-antagonist well help with your tolerance, if i were you id look into a magnesium supplement.
(aside from being an NMDA-antagonist, amphs fuck with your body's magnesium levels and it'll help with tremors)

thanks for the responses! yeah i don't really care about the euphoria, i just want to be able to study because i'm taking a lot of hard classes. it also helps with my other add symptoms so i don't want those effects to go away due to higher tolerance either. i take 350-500mg of magnesium citrate every day, usually all at once at night after the adderall wears off. is the night a good time to take it or should i maybe spread it out? is magnesium a strong enough nmda antagonist to significantly combat tolerance? do you think the study tolerance will stay pretty much the same even after the 140mg i took over 24 hours?

before i was prescribed it, i also used to take it for studying a year or two ago and i had a really high tolerance then. i didn't take any for at least a year and then i was prescribed it and my tolerance wasn't as high, or else i just was looking for the study tolerance, whereas before i wanted euphoria while studying too. now i definitely need it to pass my classes (pre-nursing), and i want to make sure i don't get a high tolerance where it would stop working for studying. i heard it's good to take breaks but it's really hard for me because i have to study a lot every day to keep up with my classes and also look for a part time job, so if i don't take it for a day i think i won't be very productive. and it helps me to not crave other drugs as well (i used to use a lot of recreational drugs but i decided to stop a year ago and have been pretty much completely sober since getting prescribed adderall, because as soon as i was started taking it daily, my desire to get high went away, even though i wasn't getting high from the adderall either because the dose isn't high enough. i've hardly even considered taking a higher dose of adderall than i'm supposed to, and the only reason i did it the other day was because it was the only way i could stay awake and study efficiently enough to pass my test. i don't plan on doing that again if possible). so if i take a break i'm at higher risk for using other drugs too, which i want to avoid.

also, sometimes i take baking soda to help the adderall stay in my system longer so i can study more. will this contribute significantly to raising my tolerance? thanks!

a 50mg XR is still alot. A 30mg XR is still very euphoric for me, but only helps me focus SOLID the first 4 hours and then maybe another 3-4 hours after that, not as much.

You shouldn't be taking more then 50mg XR per day... even in severe cases.

Not even that... The mainstay is 30 mg XR a day. I just don't see the need for more. Is your doctor feeding this to you cause he is trying to get you addicted to come back? This is well known in the medical community. I hope this is not the case.

Jay - I understand that in the US finances become a part of practicing medicine, but making a statement like that is a huge insult to all the medics out there who care about their patients and above all else try to ensure they never do them any harm. I could believe that the occasional bad doctor might not have patient wellbeing as their top priority, but to say it is "well known in the medical community" is a pretty sweeping and unfounded thing to come out with. Most doctors become doctors because they want to help their patients, and vewing them as the enemy isn't a very healthy or grown-up way of interacting with the healthcare system. Some doctors might not be great (in terms of knowledge or attitude) but if that's the case change doctors, dont spread slander and make generalisations about the profession.

Also, if a doctor was selfish enough to get a patient "addicted" for their own financial gains, an amphetamine seems like a poor choice. Surely a drug which produces physical dependence such as benzodiazepines or opioids would be more effective..

Zrawdog, if you are doubtful about the dose you are prescribed, do take this up with your doctor. It is not really a good idea to start abusing a medication you need, as it will cause problems. The best advice we can give is to take a short break and to take them as prescribed in the future.

I'm going to close this now, I don't see any HR potential in keeping it open.
