Stimulants and strenuous exercise are an unhealthy mix I am pretty sure as it puts a fairly strong strain on the heart, I was into martial arts for years and am interested what martial arts you are practising as some would definately be considered quite a bit less intense than others in general work out wise, although of course this is always going to vary between different gym/dojo/clubs within the same disciplines. I actually have a little experience with using various drugs in the practise of various disciplines and in particular with stimulants have had mixed results.
Personally I think marijuana is a negative thing for martial arts and/or full contact fighting whether used before and/or during training or fighting or even frequently in your personal time. It fucks your cardio and for me personally I always was a shit boxer stoned and regardless of what Joe Rogan or Eddie Bravo have to say on the issue I have never felt marijuana had a positive impact on grappling/BJJ whatsoever, the difference isn't as bad as with striking as its not quite as intense cardiovascularly but it definately slows you down. MAYBE if you were predominantly a bottom guard player it would give the slightest edge. I don't know if you watch MMA but laughably a few years ago Pride FC overturned Nick Diaz's submission victory against Takanori Gomi after he tested positive for cannabis claiming that marijuana made him numb to Gomi's punches.
I do feel that I have had a better performance in training from low to moderate amounts of a stimulant, but I do have to question the benefit of a slightly improved performance when unless you are a habitual user most training sessions or any time you may have to use your skills in self defence you are unlikely to be on stimulants. When you consider it is unhealthy for the cardiovascular system it is probably more beneficial in the long run to be training sober. In regards to fighting, I can't say I have never hit a good dose and felt a slight imrpovement but most often I feel like my heart rate rises too quickly and I get lightheaded after a while and also I find it much harder to pace myself so I end up going all out for a short period of time and then burning out.
A few years ago now I was at a friends house who was prescribed ritalin at the time, I used to take the stuff almost daily for a while in school but it was atleast 18 months since I had it. I took a dose typical of what I used to and proceeded to have a grappling match with my mate as we were both huge UFC fans at the time with a bit of formal grappling experience. I eventually tapped him out but immediately afterwards I felt my heart racing so fast and very lightheaded. I could barely walk inside to the bathroom and had to crawl the last little bit because I felt so weak, I was dry wretching and had to get my mate grab me water, this lasted a good 15 minutes of me basically immobile on the toilet floor only moving to dry wretch and drink the odd bit of water. My mate almost rang an ambulance and honestly to this day it is one of, if not the most scary drug experience I have ever had in my life.
This is an interesting topic to me but I guess doesn't come up so often among most regular drug users who don't seem to practise martial arts (unfortunately that includes me for a good few years now) but there is probably good reason for this as most drug use will have an adverse impact on your MA training. Many professional athletes are a testimony to the fact is is possible to use or abuse drugs and be successful at your chosen sport but it is definately a hinderance (unless talking performance enhancers) and professional athletes are also generally very gifted physically.
