Heya everyone.
I was just given some of these amitriptyline and I have no idea what they are. A quick search came up as an antidepressant and I was suppose to get something that works for pain (ie. opiate). Any and all information would be greatly appreciated as I was planning on taking some lsd tonight and have some oxycodone and xanax in my med cabniet and these just came in. I just want to know what they are, what effects they have on some one, what their contraindications are and if it's safe to mix with any of the above mentioned substances. Thank you all in advance. I tried to do a quick search on BL but I didn't come up with any threads with this name in the title and I really don't have the time to seach all 5 pages of threads for this one.

It's very sedating, chances are it'll just make you sleep, and can make you feel quite numb and groggy. Wouldn't do it before the LSD, but may be good for a comedown afterwards. Definitely don't mix it with xanax or oxy if you haven't done it before, combination of downers ain't good.

Don't do that drug without seeking medical advice. It can be extremely powerful.

It is an antidepressant at high doses, but it is also a painkiller at low doses (although not an opioid one). It is often used for neuropathic (nerve) pain or fibromyalgia. It can be sedating and has side effects in common with other tricyclic antirepressants (dry mouth, blurred vision etc) but the doses used for pain are a lot lower than those used for depression.

If you are not keen on taking it, by all means go back to your doctor and ask them to explain why they prescribed it, the pros and cons and what alternatives they can offer.

It can be extremely sedating as nAON mentioned, and always left me overly groggy. It is usually prescribed for insomnia, depression etc.

Do not mix it with your oxycodone or alprazolam. It'll just make you fall asleep, especially if your dose is any higher than 25 mg of amitriptyline.

Avoid mixing it with LSD also.

That's at the high end of usual starting doses - the antidepressant dose is in the range of 100-200mg or so, but often people are started on 10 or 20mg initially for pain (although 50mg isn't unheard of) - but BL isn't a medical site unfortunately so if you are concerned your best bet is to speak to your doctor. Taking it at night is the best bet if you want to try it, given how sedating it can be.

Be aware that an overdose of amitriptyline can be dangerous.

I had some as well and found mixed reviews on the internet. I was pretty damn desperate at the time because I was depressed and hadn't seeked any professional help, so I found amitriptyline. I would take it before this archaeology class I despised, and it would make my head droop, and almost fall asleep. I can take lots of opiates and benzos and not feel that out of it compared to this old-school antidepressant. Try it once, in a pretty low dose, see how you feel, repeat if necessary ;)

Finally back to a computer instead of a phone to type a reply. Thank you all so much for your answers! I'm still a little foggy on exactly what it does but from what I've got from ya'll it's basically good for sleeping.

I will be staying away from it when I trip because I really don't want to dampen the affects of the psychedelic but I have been having a small problem with opiates, as I like them way too much as a substance for every day use and not just an experience, like most other substances I use so after tonight I will be attempting to kick and hopefully these little brown pills will help me to sleep as the other night when I was trying to sleep without any opiates for the day my legs couldn't stay still. I know it's such a small w/d comparatively but it still hurts me. So with all you with experience, would taking one of these help with opiate w/d's?

Thank you all. I really do appreciate all the information that you give me on this site :)

What I've gotten from the thread
1. Do NOT take with LSD

Not really in my experience, it has helped the insomnia slightly but always seemed to intensify the horrible RLS I already had enough trouble with.

Thank you! So would they be good for w/d from opiates?

It's a different sort of painkiller and isn't cross-tolerant so it won't really relieve the symptoms in the way that another opioid would, but it might help with aches and pains and it will help you to get some sleep..

Amitrptiline is a tri-cyclic antidepressant that raises seratonin levels in the brain. It can be used for depression of course, but also for neuropathic pain. I take it for my pain and find that it works ok. Be careful while taking it and mixing it with other seratogenic drugs and seratonin syndrome can become a problem. It does help with sleep like the others have said.

Here is a thread that can explain some things to not mix with it: Antidepressants-and-Recreational-Drugs

Hope this is helpful to you!

My mom is prescribed and I've stolen a 100mg pill on occasion. As others have mentioned, it leaves you feeling EXTREMELY groggy/drowsy. I cut the 100mg pill into 4ths and use it as a sleeping pill once in a great while. In my opinion its absolutely non-recreational. It knocks me out pretty fast and I wake up feeling like I need a billion cups of coffee just to feel semi-coherent. Considering you already have xanax and oxycodone, I'd say adding amitryptiline is a bad idea.

The xanax and oxycodone will definitely work better for what you want. Just toss that other stuff, ive had bad experiences with it....being a zombie for a week and destroying personal relationships.
