Ever since reading Moby Dick i have been fascinated by ambergris - it has always seemed to possess some kind of magical effect, then i recently read ambrein the chemical responsible for the smell of ambergris indeed produces strong antinociceptive effects which are reversed by naloxone. any thoughts on its pharmacology?

No real educated thoughts on pharmacology, but Ambergris, like musk, is well-known as an aphrodisiac when worn by men. So perhaps there is something there to do with hormones and enorphins?

Either way, I know I enjoy wearing Ambergris-containing perfumes, and love smelling them on other men :).

Wow, a potential analgesic that actually has a POSITIVE effect on libido....that would be incredible.

Central analgesia (for me anyway) seems to go hand in hand with a certain degree of chemical castration. An effective analgesic which not only doesn't blunt the libido, but actually boosts it would be a welcome addition in my book.

Unfortunately my guess is that if Ambrein really does have analgesic properties, they will prove to be quite minimal, and not suitable for use as an analgesic.
There seems to be a million things out there which show some analgesic activity which may even be reversed by naloxone, but at the end of the day, they are either impractical, problematic, or just so vastly inferior to existing analgesics that they are never developed.-DG

yes, im really curious about it. since its unscheduled and supposedly used as an ingredient in perfumes (in industrial quantities) i feel as if it should be available, but i cant find it. i have found ambergris and ambrox though, maybe i will do a single expensive bioassay on the former to see if it produces any interesting effects...

^ Seeing how ancient Ambergris' relationship with humans is, multitudes of people must have tried cooking with/eating it. Had anyone found anything, it wouldn't be so easily available.

exactly, and you could make the same argument about saffron which has been demonstrated to contain psychoactive alkaloids as well. in fact i would take the opposite view of Jam and say - since it has had an ancient relationship with humans in food and medicine some mild psychoactive effects are quite likely, but the rarity and price of the drug have prohibited it from being explored fully - like saffron. from the animal tests it would seem quite likely that if someone where to eat 15g of ambergris they would experience some kind of strong sensation...what exactly im not sure...but i would love to find out!

Ambergris and Saffron! Talk about some classy highs indeed ;). Threads like these make happy the homo within me :D.

I'd definitely be open-minded to hear experiences. That said, I have handled bulk ambergris before. It is extremely pungent, and I imagine would be difficult to consume orally, like camphor (ewww...)

As with my wearing Ambergris-containing perfumes, I use any excuse to utilize saffron in my cooking :).
