Amateur chemistry blog

So I keep teetering on the idea of actually posting my experiments when I do them on my blog for 2 reasons:

1) People are jerks and they dont read or reply to blogs thus creating more of a journal thing. I do like that because I can write how I feel and not think my life is on an movie screen for all Greenlighters to see but at the same time spurring some interest in blogs may be good for others.

2) People are stupid jerks and dont understand chemistry, I am a stupid jerk that does and it is my goal to make all the worlds jerks like I am, interested in science and chemistry. Someday a major goal of mine will be getting kids into chemistry as it is the saving grace in my life and its what i live for so I cant picture my life without it.

Some background as to why:

Someone was kind enough to introduce me to science when i was an infant, quite literally i wanted to be a weatherman/storm chaser when i was 8 (not an exaggeration) I even met local weathermen at science expos in the area thanks to my mother when i was about 10. My parents went above and beyond i owned a telescope a microscope and a chemistry set by the time i was 12 and was checking out books on matter and energy, radiation and weather systems before i could fully understand the material. I took the Chemistry SAT in high school for fun, my chemistry teacher at the time amazed because as he said "we havent even covered a year of material, how did you get a 590/700 on something you never learned" Well duh i study outside of school because i buy chemistry books or did in 2005. All of this accumulated into me majoring in chemistry at Uconn for 3 years, getting to advanced inorganic 2 prior to losing funding and being forced out (double majored in psychology too)

But the major problem I am having is a lot of it can lead to unintended outcomes if i share information and as this isnt the amateur chemistry website i do actually post on people may not be so understanding about Iodine's many uses and only focus on one. I remember when I first got into organic chemistry i was amazed at how many scheduled chemicals they had in the open, come to find out the US schedules most things thanks to meth cooks and although all of my documents are in order at home along with lab reports and invoices and uses of all items it may not be the same for you people.

Right now I am documenting my extraction of Piperine so maybe I will start there, plus I did spend like 800 dollars on glass this year it would be cool to show off the equipment of my craft, most of it is "Chemglass" brand, not that it means anything to you guys but it means i spent like 4X on American made glass when you can get the same thing for nothing from China, never thought id be a label whore ;)

We will see in the upcoming weeks because i would love to go on endlessly about chemistry with new people, those around me lose interest faster then myself so new people are always welcome.

I've enjoyed chemistry too. I only got into it during college when I became interested in "applied" chemistry like extractions. I had a large collection of lab equipment much of which I bought second hand from the university surplus store dirt cheap. Most of it was vintage American and European glass and other apparatus. A chemistry major is a good foundation for grad school or medical school though I advise against getting a PhD in chemistry because chemistry PhDs have a high unemployment rate. Have fun with your extractions and keep us updated.

I wish I could find a university in the area that would do that for me. Hell I would even just love to get their chemical wastes containing mercury, iodine, and cyanide because those are expensive and hard to obtain unless someone is selling it on the forums I post on. Then there is the whole transferring money without a bank account thing but I may have found a way around that through the place I work at.

This isnt for a job, this is my life. Thats what people have a hard time getting past. Sure I list my dream job as "research synthetic organic chemist" which means i will live in the chemistry building at a university making probably no money... but access to a full lab with all that industrial equipment *drools* that is the goal, i would probably even pay them for that even with a PhD. If I want money I will do something else lol, I know that probably sounds crazy but thats partly why i think I am destined for something good through chemistry, for me its like being a guitarist and people saying "why youll never get famous, or theres almost 0 chance" the guitarist doesnt play the guitar for money or fame, frankly he probably doesnt even understand his draw to it... that is how i am with chemistry.

Chemistry is the thing i default to that makes the world disappear. When I am doing it its just me and the atoms and molecules and nothing else matters, its my passion in life and although organic is what i discovered peaks my interest i am not above the inorganic it takes to say launch a rocket into the sky and make it report :)

There are back doors into chemistry. You could work as a lab tech. Many university labs hire full or part time workers. When I was a student, we had a lab tech who literally slept in the lab and only went home weekends . Showered at tge gym and hid his sleeping bag in his desk.
He had access to the equipment and supplies and he could take home small samples if nobody would notice. He was taking classes too.
I think the field of Medicinal Chemistry might interest you. The training allows you to design and synthesize pharmacologically active molecules.

org. chem. has never been a forte of mine but i would enjoy reading about it if it's written by someone passionate about the topics. i'm the same way with computer stuff, always thinking about something that doesn't seem to interest many of the people directly around me in my life, so writing about it feels like an outlet

I am really hoping when I go back to school as I will be just over 30 with a new found appreciation for time and application of it, that is to say i am no longer a stinking drunk who goes to class hungover 90% of the time, i will be able to carve my name as "the older student who already knows how to do all the labs" and since i am 4 chemistry classes away from taking all the undergrad classes at Uconn, all except biochem (not a lot of interest there for me) I think i stand a strong chance at making good friends with the facility something the 22 year old me had no interest in doing. I really think that this time, coming out of an IV heroin addiction, i have 100% of my focus back.

I think this time its for real last time it was just "something to do"

Yeah literally would be at parties and someone would get me started and i would take the white board, everyone has them in their dorms in college, and draw out what i was talking about because its easier. To an audience of drunk college kids who didnt care about classes and id be like "no man this is how organometalics relate to cancer drugs, its fascinating dont you think?" and it would be like 15 minutes before i was done and no one cares.

Plus since i have a lab note book and no one is reviewing it for me i wanna do something with the work as a solid work for people to review and criticize or learn from but feedback is always nice and it would be nice to spur interest in blogs and i love talking about chemistry
