Last night my wife and I both ate about 3/4 of a large, dried Amanita Muscaria cap.

It started with a warmth in my chest, a bit like strong alcohol, possibly due to GABAergic action. I began feeling sedated, but with a strong caffeine-like sympathetic nervous system stimulation. I felt "antsy", as is often the case with any new substance I ingest, so it could be chalked up to first-time jitters.

Then, it hit with a strength I was not fully expecting. I felt chills going throughout my entire body, a deep bone chilling, though in spite of this I was sweating profusely. I put on a sweater and a coat, which helped the chills slightly, but only increased my sweating, leading to a further chilliness. I took off my pants and stood over the floor-heater, which felt nice but made me begin dripping sweat.

I felt lightheaded and queasy, and collapsed on the couch. Laying with my wife was a sublime experience, and though I was still wracked with cold sweat, I felt warm and infinitely peaceful. We were listening to Neutral Milk Hotel, and I noticed a peculiar auditory effect. When my eyes were closed, it seemed as though the imputs going into each ear were split into separate stimuli, as though there were two speakers playing music that would gyrate around my head. Also, I could far more easily pick out individual melodies, giving everything I listened to a richness and complexity I had not noticed before. It was as if I were listening to these songs for the first time. Now, certain visual disturbances and distortions became apparent. The air attained a "thick", lightly soupy quality, though this was minor and fleeting. A more obvious effect was that the corners of the rooms where the three lines come together was inverted so that I saw, instead of the inside of a box, the outer corner. I could play with this, focusing and unfocusing my eyes.

As we lay there, my cold sweat became worse, and I began shivering despite my layers of clothing and the heater being on 80 degrees. I felt clammy, sweaty, cold and a little sick, so I suggested we get in a hot shower. This was a very good decision! In the warm water, all the chilliness and sweatiness was gone, replaced by wonderful warm sensations. If I eat these mushrooms again, I want to be in close proximity to a hot tub! However, it was not to last, as the beginnings of horrible nausea started cropping up. I rushed out of the shower into the bed, without even trying to dry off. The wife came soon after, and the blankets were soon completely soaked, though we were far too intoxicated to do anything about it or even care. I never quite went to sleep, instead going to a shadowy, half-dreaming state. I no longer recognized the music that I heard from across the house, it became more like the laugh-reel to a sitcom or the bustling of a greyhound station. I listened to this indecipherable noise for some time, until the shadows cloaked it away from me and I could no longer hear.

Here, in this dream-state, I became the underground mycelial growth of a patch of fly agaric. I felt my fleshy phallus-body soaked in a cool late-summer rain; my conscousness was no longer relegated to my skull-case, instead, my mind was spread evenly over the whole of my fungal growth. I felt myself, mindlessly, growing and pushing out from the damp soil. I grew to completion, three beautiful Amanita muscaria caps and all of the underground growth, stretching out under the ground beneath my phallic, now saucer-like protuberances. Understand, I could not see any of this with either inner or outer vision- this had nothing to do with vision. I was eyeless, but I knew what I was and what I was doing somehow. My consciousness became decentralized, and I just somehow knew that I was a patch of fly agaric mushrooms. I did not initiate any of the processes that I underwent either- these were automatic biological processes that my mind-network was simply witness to.

As all this was occurring, one of my dogs began barking at something outside (we had accidentally left the front door wide open), which shook me somewhat from my hallucinatory stupor. The bed was soaking wet, and the house was freezing. I got up, shivering and chattering my teeth, and closed the door. I stood over the floor heater and warmed up for a few minutes, after which my wife came out and told me that our other dog pissed on the bed. Well good. It had been barely an hour and a half sense we went to bed.

We lay on the couch and smoked a cigarette, which incidentally feels very nice while on A. muscaria, after which I promptly fell again into the shadowy dream-state, though I do not remember what it was that I experienced. I slept or was more-or-less unconscious till about 4 am, at which point I woke up to the Hasselhoff reality show. I just lay there watching it for a while, not saying anything or making a sign that I was awake, untill I burst out laughing at the fact that the hoff's daughter quit college to be in a pop band with her sister that just got a job on another tv show. Damn, that sucks yo!

We talked about the previous night's experience- I told her about becoming a patch of mushrooms and all. When I asked her about her experience, she said she only felt "fucked up", no real psychedelic or even interesting effects, with a predominant ill feeling. This is a bit ironic, because before we ate them, I had been the one not expecting anything more than uncomfortable intoxication, while she had been a bit more hopeful for psychedelic effects. Different strokes, huh?

It was far more interesting than I had expected, and I would be interested in taking a higher dose if not for the feeling that the nauseating/adverse effects may be in equal parts with the potentially cool effects, so to experience a more psychedelic trip one may have to endure further adverse effects. Also, the chills/cold sweat is horrible with this stuff, though my partner didn't seem to get that effect, but it was probably the worst part. I hate feeling clammy!

I don't see why this couldn't be the Soma of the Vedas, but it is a far less forthcoming 'shroom than Psilocybe spp. I will probably eat them again, but not for a good while.

Transmogrification into mycelial form, interesting, very very interesting.

Beautifully written. Amanita muscaria has intrigued me for quite some time, I would really like to try some. Also, do you think a good toke would have been useful in offsetting the nausea, or would that have just made it worse?

Wow, excellent first post, keep coming around! Very well written, and a subject of much transient interest with me. But this season , out in the woods mushroom picking (for others, edibles and psilocybes), I couldn't help but collect a bunch of beautiful Amanita muscarias. Never taken the plunge (ironic after all these years) but plan on it sometime soon, just for the wonderful cultural connotations, and because the pharmacology really is some fascinating stuff. Did you dry the mushrooms with any heat? And do have an approximate weight of how much you ingested? I've heard taking anti-cholinenergics can help with the nasty side effects brought on by the small amounts of muscarine present. I've been toying with the idea of making an alcohol extraction, and using it in small amounts at bedtime as an adjunct to dreamtime, a direct punch GABAergic...

I love the mycelial mat and flowering image.....love it. And the Neutral Milk Hotel and dogs barking is just the icing on the cake. All too familiar :D

Once again, thanks for the report. Stick around:)

Two great reports by first time newlighters in one day? That is awesome! Thanks for the report, AluminumFoilRobots. I've never been a person who wanted to get married. But if I was married, I would want a wife that shared in my mind-altering sessions.

Great report. :) This is the first report that has actually inspired a desire to experiment with the mushroom myself, rather than simply enjoy others' tales of their adventures.
