this says that coffee contains substances that has potent opiate receptor agonism activity... am I getting this right? could someone more phenomenologically sound explain what this means in lamens term?
Thanks

coffee HAS ANYTHING but effects upon ones opiate-receptors.. Caffeine isn't even a real stimulant, coffee drinkers are retarded if they are drinking coffee for anything BUT the taste.. That is the truth. w0rd.

that's a cool study. they said that, given morphine and other opiate chemicals have been found in our tissues and breast milk and etc, they wanted to screen foodstuffs for any compounds with opioid activity.

they screened a number of materials through rat brain cells, and measured opiate brain cell response.

they found that coffee has a compound (molecular weight 1000-3500, aka it is rather larger than naloxone) with *anti-* opioid properties similar to naloxone.

so if you drink enough coffee, you could maybe kill your opiate high. you might also twitch quite a bit, since it's anti-opioid activity, not pro-opioid.

chances are, this chemical isn't there in sufficient quantity to actually kill an opiate high. if you like your coffee with your opiates, don't worry, i would guestimate that you're only shaving 1% of the high away.

if i misread the abstract, somebody correct me ;)

Ive seen alot of people say they drink their coffee & it helps their high with opiates which I could never understand that. I always thought coffee would cause an adverse effect like the article states. By the way, I havent drank coffee or soda with caffeine since 1993.

Coffee is a stimulant, because caffeine is a stimulant. Granted, its not nearly as powerful or doesn't even have the same method of action as the more potent stuff (amphetamine, methamphetamine, cocaine, etc), but it is still certainly a stimulant, even if its just a mild one.

yes, I was always under the assumption that caffeine IS a stimulant and one of the most commonly used one at that, just imagine the uproar if all of a sudden they declared caffeine an illegal and dangerous drug and outlawed it.. lol underground starbux and all.

Edit: also thanks for clarifying that Qwe.. I wouldn't have surmised that from what I was reading... I always fancied myself pretty decent at pharmacological terminology but it just goes to show that being halfway intelligent does not substitute a proper education, Lawd I even thought it said it was agonizing opiate receptors not antagonizing

caffeine is a psychological and physical stimulant, its effects are extremely clearly documented. Dunno how one can really take an opposite stand on something so common and so obvious..
and I can definitely see it having antagonist effects, insofar as 'observable' effects.

You might not agree with this but you only look at caffeine this way because you probably have used it a lot or know people who have used it a lot. I've read reports of taking higher than your normal amount of caffeine or taking caffeine when you have very little prior use of it.

The basic theme has been that if you're not use to caffeine, it definitely has effects and can even become extremely unpleasant.

I agree. I hardly ever drink coffee and only drink caffeine-free soft drinks and I have to tell ya when I do I have very unpleasant side-effects.

stimulants are terrible with opioids for me (not talking about IV speedballs) but pharm. speedballs suck, the stims overpower the sedation that i love and it's sort of a tug of war battle and i felt jaded...i say drink the coffee in the morning and dose your opies at night

Taking more than you wanted of anything is not good. What/who was your post in response to? Can't make sense of what the 1st paragraph is supposed to be illustrating..

Wow, I saw you as the latest post in the thread, and thought 'man, I hope he'll own up to posting complete horseshit about caffeine not being a stimulant'.
/disappointed
//shoulda expected it, given the 1st post you had in the thread...
///caffeine is a physical and mental stimulant; I don't have to research it because I'm already incredibly familiar from previous research, usage, and sales of caffeine-based supplements
